to put it in a nut shell.... diet stories are similar to other stories we tell. ofc, stories have nothing to do with actually eating food

Re: Chan practioner thinking about visiting a nyingma center

I'll second Kim.... "excellent attitude" .... and confirm... I have years on zen and chan yet appreciate nyingma/vajrayana/bon centers. I don't mind the devotional thing either.... I make no comparisons. Someone mentioned Chagdud... I'd like to read his book. Yrs ago I was at a Red Tara retreat/fest...

Re: What is this?

on the subject of what is this .... hi-jacked this from facebook tho it's not about oranges. In the early 1970s, two Buddhist masters met in Cambridge, Massachusetts. One of them, Kalu Rinpoche, was a renowned Tibetan meditation master who had spent many years in solitary retreat in the remote mount...

Re: and because they are synonymous with Mind, they are sentient beings

lol .... this mind does not belong to me/myself and I or you/yourself and us. Even Dogen says... even grasses, trees....

I know less about Dogen than Hakuin... but love Dogen... he says it above.... no need to know more

Re: By way of welcome: Let's drink some tea!

well, this must be a scene from the movie, Being There  you're too late! My props are starting to dissolve... and I"m forgetting those ummon koans which I could recite so faithfully. The essence of the rice cake story is about drinking tea or the pages from Amazon about the tea.... just as y...

Re: Dont follow a lineage (etc.), follow a teacher

DGA, don't know if I can "set you straight"... all I can try to do is tell you what I see. I hope I can articulate this.... first point, really the only point, since everything follows this. In zen, ordinary mind is not associated with what we would call ordinary in this so-called samsaric everyday ...

Re: An Interesting Book to share

Thanks for this Fortyeightvows, I will spend time with this tomorrow... just what you quoted opens the field... I always did a double take, relating to clear light and then hearing the talk about vexations. I suspect it's partly the languaging... yet it's a diff orientation too. Zen expresses it as ...

Re: An Interesting Book to share

I remember this being discussed on zfi.

not so strange for me.... I know zen and Tibetan teachers who have taught together.... I was there. They offered a collaboration of their traditions... not so diff and yet we can learn from each other. We need more of this IMO.

Minobu, you misquoted me on your last post.... it seems to be the source of your discontent. sorry gents, I was responding to someone who lost his job, nothing else. Wild Fox koan.... good for this friday morning/afternoon/evening... Tanahashi gives the following rendering of the koan:[1] Every time Baizhang, Zen Master Dahui, gave a dharma talk, a certain old man would come to listen. He usually left after the talk, but one day he remained. Baizhang asked, "Who...
