Re: What's all this nonsense about sitting still?

If you are conceptualizing something, you are adding a mental construct on top of the "raw experience" of reality, an extra filter for your brain to have to process before responding to any given situation. As your raw experience is nothing more than your own mind, you are obstructing your mind wit...

Re: What's all this nonsense about sitting still?

Recognizing the freedom from the self is a long way from the skillful functioning of the original mind. Long before, or after? Beside this, you didn't make a comment on my previous post and quotes it contains. We are walking into some weird ground of "awakening is not the same as awakening". "Regar...

Re: What's all this nonsense about sitting still?

Did I say that? No, I did. I extended your statement further, explaining that self continues to do, whatever it did, and Buddha is detached from the person. You views seems to imply that the self changes and becomes free from "inappropriate" behaviors. But since married laymen don’t give up sex, ho...

Re: What's all this nonsense about sitting still?

If I may ask, what does that have to do with enlightenment? Awakened ones stay always sober, restrain from having sex, and live long... or what? Awakened ones are free from grasping and the delusion of self and all its needs and fears. So, the self continues... Buddha is free from being moved by th...

Re: Is it possible to get a religious vaccine exemption?

I don't know what can be gained by a pissing contest of Western vs Eastern medicine. On the other hand it could be valuable if a practitioner of Tibetan Medicine or Ayurveda started a thread on what Western medicine could learn from these systems and what we as laypeople could take on board. In hosp...

Re: What's all this nonsense about sitting still?

Well, seems like it wasn't so easy with Watts either for all his intellectual brilliance. He died prematurely, an alcoholic and a compulsive womaniser. If I may ask, what does that have to do with enlightenment? Awakened ones stay always sober, restrain from having sex, and live long... or what? Aw...

Re: What's all this nonsense about sitting still?

Why do people struggle so with enlightenment? Once you understand it intellectually you can have it. All this wishy-washy business about sitting still and discipline, is it just an alternate route? Is it just a way to crack the ego's defenses? To quote Alan Watts, "If you have a thin shell ...

Re: Is it possible to get a religious vaccine exemption?

Touche! Whoops. Did that deadpan a little too well... I meant to convey that multiple anecdotes is definitely not data. You're correct, there's nothing convincing or evidence-constituting in testimonies. No, the oops is mine! I thought you were kidding, but couldn't resist the rant regardless! :foc...

Re: Is it possible to get a religious vaccine exemption?

We have a sample of two people who have not contracted flu without the vaccine. I have no idea how useful the flu vaccine is, but I know that the above is not a proof that it's useless. But Dan, don't you know that the plural of anecdote is "data"? :coffee: Touche! But a whole lot of anecdotes is a...

Re: Is it possible to get a religious vaccine exemption?

I haven't had a flu shot in probably 20+ years (I'm 30) and I can't remember the last time I had the flu, probably when I was very young. My son is now 4 and he's never had a flu shot either, and no flu. It's unnecessary in my opinion. We have a sample of two people who have not contracted flu with...

Re: American "Zen"

Zen realization is shallow and easily overcome by the habits of our mind. As a result we have to keep practicing. There may be some deeply enlightened people in Zen now who have gone beyond this but they are not the people defiling the zendo. I hope you are wrong and it's certainly not what was tau...

Re: Is it possible to get a religious vaccine exemption?

It's hard not to ingest poison these days of age unless you grow your own food. And yet amazingly people live longer (no doubt due to our lifespans artificially extended by our reptilian overlords so we can slave for them longer). Thrsaymachus, I think you might be jumping the gun here a bit. Just ...

Re: American "Zen"

I think Nonin has said similar things in the past, ie that awakening is impermanent just like everything else. I think he is just being honest and teaching from experience. If you or I feel that awakening or liberation is permanent, we should seek out a teacher who honestly says so. Horses for cours...

Re: Cleary on Cultish Zen

Sorry to butt in, gents. My take on the just sitting=enlightenment is that it is once there is just sitting - without the proliferations, the sitter, etc. So it's the sales -pitch of the Soto school - shikantaza=enlightenment. The fine print is that there is a lot of training to be able to just sit.

Re: Is it possible to get a religious vaccine exemption?

My wife and I both had the Mantoux TB test. Our three children were vaccinated multiple times - it's quite strict here in Australia. We are a very healthy family so far. Thanks to vaccines polio cases have been reduced from hundreds of thousands to under a thousand per year and small-pox completely ...

Re: Cleary on Cultish Zen

The sources were given, they are both Thomas Cleary's books (as the title of the thread suggests) and their titles are also given with the page number. But if anyone wants more, like ISBN or date of publication I can also give that. Or, yes, you can search for it online. How is it important? in cas...

Re: Cleary on Cultish Zen

He did cite the sources. Concern trolling is a great term, BTW, but I'd be interested to hear from some serious practitioners in response to these. I sit with a Soto group at Uni where I work. I like the teacher a lot and very happy to be able to participate, but what I still don't get is the worshi...

I'm not sure of the context of those quotations, but I suspect that they are waypoints on the path rather than an ultimate view of theirs.
