Re: What are you doing about the coronavirus?

How about you make a contribution to this instead of mocking my word choices. Your word choice indicates you have not grasped the seriousness of the situation. There are 7 billion people on the planet. It is likely that up to 1.4 billion people will be infected. Of those up to 42 million people wil...

Re: What are you doing about the coronavirus?

Apparently obesity is a risk factor too. Because of that, I saw where it was suggested the case mortality rate for the US would be higher than China. Hmm... Hope not. It is possibly not quite the same virus as the one that hit China. My understanding (could be wrong) is that generally these things ...

Re: What are you doing about the coronavirus?

It's OK to be scared when bad things are happening. I'm scared. A lot of people will get hurt. Now there is still time to prepare. Panic gets in the way of preparing well; it doesn't help, it hinders. There is a manifold of suffering, yes. But there always is. Death can come at any time, anyway! Ou...

Re: What are you doing about the coronavirus?

It's March 11th. If America doesn't panic in 21 days you are Italy. Hong Kong panicked and I'm very glad they did. Seeing people die in the streets from SARS made them understand exponential threats. They had 30 confirmed cases on January 8th. They held the line and only have 121 cases now. America...

Re: What are you doing about the coronavirus?

Aus hit 30 confirmed case March 1. Canada March 3. We have both tripled confirmed cases in the last week. It's time to socially engineer a lower transmission rate. At this rate(which is abnormally high and largely due to increased vigilance) we are 9 weeks from a million cases. Italy had even highe...

Re: Dukkha and pure mathematics.

an overly intellectual, thought-focused disposition can be a huge hindrance to Dharma practice I totally agree, that's exactly my problem with mathematics as is taught today, i.e., without the mystical side which by all evidence the Pythagoreans did emphasize. Perharps it was a peculiar development...

You can look at the figures from Italy, Nicholas. They are not too encouraging.

Re: What are you doing about the coronavirus?

The entire Switzerland has hardly more people than Washington and we have nearly 340 cases, about 80% of the US total. There are cases reported within 15km of our place. One of my students was in quarantine (had contact with an infected person), apparently cleared now. There are cases in both Biel a...

Re: What are you doing about the coronavirus?

I don't really dig the overreaction to Rory, Johnny. I think she is actually quite right and acting early is prudent, though of course it makes no difference if you do it and nobody else does. It should be a community action to act very decisively to stop the spread before it is too late. The vacci...

Re: What are you doing about the coronavirus?

FWIW, the reactions here are cautious and yet the government was very quick to ban gatherings over 1000 people at the first sign of infection in the country. There are also guidelines distributed everywhere on how to avoid the contagion. Some are calling for stronger measures, but schools are still ...

I figure 2-6 weeks before it gets to my area. The reason I’m concerned is that my Sangha are largely older, diabetic, immune compromised, or are otherwise not well. It could threaten people’s lives here. It's safe to assume it's already there. Exponential growth looks like nothing the first few cyc...

Re: Dukkha and pure mathematics.

I largely agree with Malcolm. Perhaps not 'no role', but not a major role. Logic can be helpful and clear thinking, concentration and devotion to truth are important, IMO, and they are arguably qualities that mathematical training helps develop. FWIW, I am a trained mathematician, phd, publications,...

There are some knowledgeable and experienced people here and also lots of pointless and rancorous debates. Hope you are good at sorting the wheat from the chaff!

Re: Why is Buddhism so elitist and cliquey?

Much could be said about the absurdity of these people's views. Maybe there's a serious point hiding underneath that. Why did the whole topic of identify politics become so important to that generation at that point in time? A few decades ago it was either a non-issue, or it was about civil rights....

Re: Why is Buddhism so elitist and cliquey?

I think they were under the impression that Banh Mi were somehow "purely" Vietnamese, like the Vietnamese had just randomly invented something exactly like a baguette... which is funny on a bunch of different levels. :rolling: Though it is worth noting that for a long time, Vietnam was about the on...
