Re: Taking Stock of Practice

Great thread, kudos to the OP and the respondents.   I have a somewhat different take on what I see as W's dilemma, not to negate the worthy answers so far. Many of us, myself included, do like things to come easy. Almost have an expectation that they do. A hard slog, not only going ...

Re: in practice chan do I need teacher !

I know some people have written to teachers who agreed to give guidance online, in Skype sessions, with an understanding that eventually a face-to-face meeting will take place. Just do your best.

Good luck!!!

Re: Pete Buttigieg

Nathan Robinson of Current Affair did a pretty long and intelligent takedown of Mayor Pete mostly based on Buttigieg's book but also on his tenure as the Mayor so far. Not sure if Robinson has an agenda except for his admitted Socialist stance, but I must say I was persuaded. https://www.currentaff...

Oh, Jesse, I can't even begin to imagine how this.must feel for you. Even though my father is 82, and might be in the same place in just a few months.

May Roger be free from suffering. May you both be well. Take care of yourself, Jesse. Maybe that's the best you can do for your old man.

Re: First Ever Black Hole Image Released

I've always found black holes fascinating. An object at the center of every galaxy which has almost inconceivable mass, which can never be seen, but which shoots out crushed particles at about the speed of light. It's fundamental to the composition of the universe, yet totally unobservable. Would p...

Re: time traveling?

I think many of us suffer from mild forms of paranoid ideation of the 'secret world government' type. This is no joke and certainly not intended as an insult. It seems to me to be what theistic impulses often morph into, sadly. So rather than an Almighty in charge of it all, there is now some secret...

Probably depends who you ask. I've practiced with a traditional Jogye teacher and read Seung Sahn's books as well as listening to some teachers. I think to some extent Seung Sahn did his own thing, but was still a product of Jogye. And as anywhere, there are different teachers and personalities.

Re: Soto Practice At Home

Aren't there groups you could visit occasionally where you are? (where are you located actually?)

To meet a teacher in real life and sit a retreat every now and then can be really really helpful.

Of course sitting with an online group can be very good too and motivate one to sit regularly.

If you have a knack for teaching maths, this is a rare and wonderful thing! And I am telling you this as a maths teacher, likely less talented at teaching and more jaded than you. But most of all, I sense, it is important to get grounded, feel the earth under your feet, maybe even take the shoes off...

CASE 30: Mind is Buddha Case: Daibai asked Baso in all earnestness, “What is Buddha?” Baso answered, “Mind is Buddha.” Mumon's Commentary: If you grasp it on the spot, you wear Buddha's clothes, eat Buddha's food, speak Buddha's words, do Buddha's deeds; you are Buddha himself. Though this may be so...

Re: Rebirth as AI 'organism'

I suppose lurking behind the counterarguments here is a kind of an animism, isn't there? Does the chair I am sitting on, experience? If you think it might, then I don't really have much to say except that I thought it didn't fit the Buddhist definition of sentient being. Experience may indeed close...

Re: Rebirth as AI 'organism'

We are aware I have a very hard time with that statement. It just seems like one of those broad, ambiguous statements that serves as a repository for all kinds of observations, inferences, conclusions, speculations. To work with that, we need to simply accept it as an irreducible value. and experie...

We are aware and experience. AI, so far, is basically a bunch of outputs on the basis of inputs, ie a relay device.
