Re: Mipham: Gelug = Svatantrika Madhyamaka

The Svatantrika Madhyamaka - which is just below the most profound school in the Madhyamaka philosophy, the Prasangika Madhyamaka - uses a term called nominal ultimate reality. A working definition of the word “nominal” is “in name only,” as in something that is just merely labeled as ultimate real...

Re: is a home made statue acceptable?

Well, I learned there are differences in this matter regarding the different traditions. Interesting. I thought this are basics where theravada, pureland, mahayana and vajrayana have to agree, because it is no unusual thing in buddhism generally to make statues, :sage: But pardon me, finally I'll sh...

Re: is a home made statue acceptable?

I think, since the question was posed generally in a non-specific forum, it was interesting to discuss it from different views.
Also I do not consider it as unimportant wether it is a beneficial practice to make a statue or not.

So, thanks for the conversation. :hi:

Re: is a home made statue acceptable?

So, it depends on which tradition we are talking about. In Vajrayana, making statues is a wonderful thing. Tsatsa making is even a practice. And it sounds rather like a joke, if Buddhists have statues everywhere, but those who made them are doomed? I fail to understand the intention of this teaching...

Re: is a home made statue acceptable?

It is very demeritorious to make images of the Buddha, etc., that do not correspond to the proper proportions. I was told differently. Do you have any quote? What are you talking about exactly? I remember there is a sutra with regards to this matter. It's most easy to find prove about the...

Re: is a home made statue acceptable?

The Lamrim teachings say: firstly, Buddha statues cannot be judged by outward appearance. Every statue is worth the due respect. And secondly, it is a very meritious deed to make a statue or paint a picture of a Buddha or a diety. It is very demeritorious to make images of the Buddha, etc., that do...

Re: Guess who said this?

Oops, yes, I meant if you understand god as a person or not. Nope. Not that. But once you get into yidams and dharmapalas it can sure seem that way. Yes. But this is a common misconception of people who do not really practice a yidam or dharmapala. Isn't it? At least I believe so. As soon as one pr...

I hope Trump will be stopped soon - such people often stumble upon their own feet. The sooner they fall the less people they can harm.

Re: Trump's Movement to Unilateralism

The American empire has been in decline for a while... Trump is a symptom, not a sudden cause. Trumps fans are indeed misinformed, IMO so are 90% of self described liberals who live their own bubble these days, one which involves distinctly ignoring some of the reasons for Trump's success, and simp...

Re: Trump's Movement to Unilateralism

The tragedy is that the Trump fans feel save in their bubble of misinformation. Nobody can reach them.
