This is Congo

A movie that I helped produce has been submitted to Sundance, and should be finishing post-production by January. This trailer is old, but should get the point across -

Re: The Buddha's Jihad! :D

The premise that keeps Buddhists from becoming jihadis is the idea that samsara/the world cannot be perfected as per the 1st Noble Truth. There is no making the world some sort of utopia, either politically or personally. Dharma is about improving oneself (which incidentally will improve the world ...

No, I don't feel differently. I fully agree, JD. Very telling is this discussion happening at the same time: http://www.dharmawheel.net/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=21222&p=310508#p310443 Here you can see, it is not possible for the moderation to handle everything to everybodies entire satisfaction. Re: Disappointed with this site

The pervasive attitude on this site is one of elitism, condescension, and harshness. Rather than the users creating a place where Mahayana Buddhists of all levels and traditions can gather for comradery, discussion, and advice, the usual M.O. around here is to attack weakness and assert superiority...

Re: Dial back the moderation a notch please

I'm sure no one is right 100% of the time, hell I think being right 75% of the time would be a good record, but it is definitely a valid thing for moderation to limit the duration of certain types of conversation, though I can see why from a users perspective it seems limiting. I tend to prefer a b...

No worries. You are correct, I have no clue what things look like from the moderation teams perspective. Just giving feedback based on the perspective of someone who does not see the entire picture.

Dial back the moderation a notch please

I've been noticing lately that threads are getting locked. The stated reason is usually like - "I think this discussion is finished". Which seems a bit overbearing. I realize the moderation team has a tough job to do, and I cringe at the thought of what kind of PMs moderators receive. I also realize...

Re: Power of mantras

In Vajrayana mantra's are generally passed via empowerment ceremony. The disciple and the guru go through a series of visualizations, mudras, and recitations, and the mantra is transmitted. This enables the mantra to be passed along with blessings, from guru to disciple. Sutra does not possess this ...

Re: Do you need to know what a mantra means, to get benefits

If you recite a mantra that you don't know the meaning of, and haven't received transmission of, there are benefits. For instance, shamatha can be developed. For full benefit, you need to know the meaning, and receive transmission. Kobo Daishi wrote a very good treatise called "Sound, Sign, and Real...

Re: Alms round in Mahayana countries

Thanks for this--I learned something new today. Do you know about how many monks and nuns make these rounds? And how many monasteries and temples are involved in it? Do you think that this is a general practice across Mahayana, or an outlier? No clue how many are involved in alms round. China is a ...
