Buddhism & Bon: Practicing Both at Once?

Bon and Buddhism are different religions. You should never mix them together. All your teachings must come from Bonpo Lamas, and due to the scarcity of centres you will have to travel. Samatha meditation is however universal, and you can learn it almost anywhere. My advice would be to study at a The...

Re: Potala

Avalokiteshvara (Guan-yin) is a disciple of Amitabha who has both male and female forms. Sukhavati is his Pure Land but he resides on Mount Potalaka, after which the Potala Palace is named. Amitabha's abilities are nearly limitless.

Re: Pureland study group anyone?

I came across a Chinese temple which had no texts and no teachings apart from emptiness and compassion. Their meditation was simply sitting and their only other practices were reciting Amitabha mantras and making offerings to Amitabha, Medicine Buddha or Guan-yu. I don't know their tradition but it ...

Re: Historical reasons for secrecy in Vajrayana?

There are innumerable secrets whose power simply evaporates when profanely exposed to others. There are also some things so secret that the day you speak of them will be the day of your accidental death.

Even if you could reaminate a preserved human corpse, the occupying consciousness would not be that of the original owner.

'Anarchism is founded on the observation that since few men are wise enough to rule themselves, even fewer are wise enough to rule others.' (Edward Abbey) 'To be governed is to be watched, inspected, spied upon, directed, law-driven, numbered, regulated, enrolled, indoctrinated, preached at, control...

Re: What a Zen Master is, and what a Zen Master isn't.

'Master' like 'Chief', is a title that can only be bestowed by others. Both are much debased in the present day. I know one contemporary Zen Master who refuses to be known as such, in remembrance of his own teacher, who was a 'Master' in the full, old-fashioned sense of the word. Bruce Lee never ref...

Re: Je Gampopa

Check out the biography of Rechungpa (Milarepas prodigal son) too. It is well worth loking into this, largely ignored, brilliant student of Milarepa. Milarepa likened Gampopa to the sun and Rechungpa to the moon, when referring to his two heart sons. The Rechung Kagyu lineage survives within the Ny...
