Re: More Trungpa talk

And thankfully, Venerable Palmo refused Trungpa's advances. If she would have given in to them, maybe we would have lost a very great teacher. This is the danger in this type of self-indulgent behavior of Trungpa. Ven. Palmo was young but thankfully of sound character and apparently with already de...

Re: Converting to Buddhism from Christianity

I live with a family, particularly one man who is severely passionate about his Catholic religion. When it was revealed I decided to follow the Buddhist path, I could sense the frustration and disbelief of it all. Even my mother has been having difficulty with my decision. This has been putting a s...

Re: Trapped in an elevator with Chatral Rinpoche

wow, good question... these days, I'd probably be too nervous and worried about bothering a Lama with the nonsense that would likely come gushing out of my mouth. I don't think I'd ask for anything & just feel blessed to be there. But back in the day, i once flew overseas on an impulse to see a Lama...

Re: Skype - the way forward to practice together?

Our small group in Boulder studying with Tulku Sherdor Rinpoche (who lives in upstate NY) has been using Go To Meeting to practice together and receive teachings in real time. Our Go To Meeting sangha also includes a group in Lisbon, Portugal (headed by Lama Gyurme), and other individuals around th...

Re: Scary Roach clip

When life has been lost I am generally less forgiving. Making 3 years of deep meditation open to the general public and not making sure they had decent supervision was at best irresponsible. I second that. Particularly since a friend of mine is currently in that retreat. It's more than worrying tha...

Thanks for your post & links, I wasn't aware of this publication but now I'm quite keen to check it out. Such an interesting and diverse list of women featured.. That's what I thought. My main concern was whether it should or shouldn't happen, i.e.that I was doing something wrong or encouraging an incorrect practice that might be detrimental later. Whimsy I can live with! :D Heart sutra and breath meditation sounds great, and good on you for 'knuckling down...

Re: closed eyes vs. opened eyes

Agree with Kim - closed eyes make me sleepy & day-dreamy. I guess it comes down to the main 2 distractions to meditation - over excitement and dullness. So for some who feel distracted by open eyes, closed can help.. or if you're nodding off, open eyes.. The trick i find with open eyes, is to have t...

Update, well I went ahead and confessed my lie. Turns out I was totally wrong about this persons' reaction. Lesson learned, I have the bad Karma, but at least now I acted with a sense of trust and cleared the air, felt good..hopefully lesson learned for the future, seems to come down to my assumpti...

Re: white lies

I'm going to go hard-line with this one... a lie is a lie is a lie ... there's no 'white', 'small', 'big'... there is no lie that genuinely helps anyone, especially yourself. People always use the example of, but what if the truth will upset someone? Well, you still don't have to lie. You can simply...

I can just see it on late night infomercials "the Buddha power crunch" machine, utilizing the ancient mystical techniques for a six-pack... urrgghh... reminds me of something else i saw lately, for real.. a business called 'Karmic Mastermind" that claims: When we discovered “Karmic Management”, the ...

Thanks JKhedrup, i agree it's good to get a broader convo going on. Waimeng, thanks for replying.. it's interesting you bring up ownership of the body... but why just the body? It appears to me the reading suggestions aren't out of context, as he's discussing looking at spiritual life from different angles - some for critical thinking, others for logic etc I remember years ago a Lama getting a bunch of us to read "Dragon Thunder" by Diana Mukpo about her life with Chogyam ...

Waimeng, Why don't you tell us what you find interesting about this talk and perhaps open it up for conversation?

I mean, it's an interesting headline but I find it a little 'spam-like' that you dump Tsem Rinpoche links here and don't actively discuss... just saying.

The 100 syllable Vajrasattva mantra ends with " Ah Hum Phat". Translation from Berzin Archives: AH – seed syllable for speech; HUM = seed syllable for mind; PHAT = stabilizing syllable. The AH and HUM for speech and mind complete the OM at the start of the mantra for body. May all interferences to b...

Re: Do you keep your buddhism private?

If you go around telling people "I am a Buddhist" then, by implication, you are telling them, "I am a good Buddhist". Nobody announces, "I am a Buddhist" meaning "I am a terrible Buddhist". Isn't this just boasting? ............... If you wear a wrist mala, people might think it's a bracelet and ot...
