Re: Tiantai Meditation

As for the relationship between opposites, integral to Zhiyi is the dynamic tension between extremes (which provides the basic architecture of his Threefold Inclusive Truth). Each extreme defines the other, and is in turn defined. Remove one extreme, and there is nothing to consider. Ignorance defi...

Re: Tiantai Meditation

Ziporyn has written a text with his own approach to applying his "Neo-Tiantai" philosophy - a kind of a method for self-therapy. I cannot find it now, but it existed in the form of a PDF (I found the text, it's called " Ineradicable Frustration and Liberation in Tiantai Buddhism " If anyone wants i...

Re: Shoko Asahara's last nembutsu.

I don't want to comment on Shoko Asahara. Goes without saying that his evil acts deserve condemnation. Still, I post the following here as it can be useful for reflection: Even a good person attains birth in the Pure Land, how much more so the evil person. But the peoples of the world constantly say...

Re: Dzogchen Community of Chogyal Namkhai Norbu

I'm planning on viewing the webcast. First time, following links, just registered on dzogchen.net. Now what happens. Seems like I'm going to have to buy a membership? is this right? Do you have the Guru Yoga book? It has all the necessary instructions. Do contact them if there is still time (e-mail...

Re: Dzogchen Community of Chogyal Namkhai Norbu

I just noticed they are offering videos of DI here: https://shop.shangshungfoundation.com/en/downloadable-video/661-worldwide-transmission-video-download-2000000002040.html Of course not as a replacement for the actual, real-time DI, but, as the page explains: These videos have a twofold purpose: 1....

Re: Dzogchen Community of Chogyal Namkhai Norbu

How much, much, rarer to find a great being like ChNNR who can share the natural state, at will, with thousands all over the world, and they get it with confidence. ChNNR makes it easy. The WWT is a modern day miracle. Perhaps we might reflect a little on the ephemeral nature of this most precious,...

Does anyone know if the WWT scheduled for this Saturday/ Sunday is still happening? Thanks.
There is no indication or notification that it's not happening. So we can assume that it is happening.

Re: Dzogchen Community of Chogyal Namkhai Norbu

I seem to remember someone mentioning a stream for the WWT on Facebook that was more reliable than the main webcast site? Or maybe that was for some other event. Is there such a thing? Hopefully not, Facebook is a terrible website (morally & from an UX perspective). I really hope the official webca...

Re: Why do Buddhas never joke?

Why do Buddhas never joke? Good question! What you're asking reminds me of Nietzsche: And we should call every truth false which was not accompanied by at least one laugh. and ... when I saw my devil I found him serious, thorough, profound, and solemn: it was the spirit of gravity - through him all...

Re: Yes, you need a teacher.

whether it is possible for someone to learn Buddhism only from books (also perhaps audio/video materials) and that way gain correct understanding. And the answer is yes. If you think it's impossible, you have to contradict the Lotus Sutra. Yes, there's a high chance a person will misunderstand the ...

Re: enlightment in one life

So what's the success rate like, in percentages? For instance, how many have become enlightened by following Namkhai Norbu? Everyone who follows Dzogchen teachings will attain buddhahood, either in this life, the bardo, or the very next lifetime. As Paṇḍita Vimalamitra says: Thus, there is not a si...

He's a genuine person. He's not a cult leader or anything like that. I was learning from him for some time, but we got into an argument and stopped talking since. I think sometimes he tries to stress the difference between Jodo Shinshu and other schools too much, to the point of saying that Jodo Shi...

You need teachers for pretty much everything, why would this be any different?
But I disagree if someone wants to make an absolutist statement and say: "it's impossible to make any progress without a personal teacher"

Re: Single practice schools

Alternatively, I have also heard them called "focused practice" schools. I much prefer this terminology. It comes off as more accurate to me. "Focused school" would be accurate for Honen, Dogen, Nichiren, maybe Ippen. For Shinran however, "Single practice" fits perfectly. More than "focused practic...
