Re: The "Lotus tradition"

Hello all! I've heard talk about something called the East Asian Lotus tradition. I have something of a vague idea of what this could be, a term relating to the various sects that hold the Lotus Sutra in extremely high regard, but which sects, or sect, is speficied precisely by this term? All which...

Re: "Tiantai Pure Land"

I purchased the dissertation on that ProQuest page. (Direct PDF download)
Don't use any "free" links as they're not safe.
I'm going to read it now, thank you.

Careful with that first link though ... looks like a scam website. I don't think you can actually download it there.

"Tiantai Pure Land"

I'm trying to locate this text : https://books.google.si/books/about/Siming_Zhili_and_Tiantai_Pure_Land_in_th.html?id=iMyfAAAAMAAJ&redir_esc=y ... for a long time now, but it seems impossible, at least here in Europe. Anybody knows how to find it? Otherwise - does anybody have any resources on this ...

Re: is Cheontae/Tendai Seon/Zen and Pureland is the same?

As for Cheontae and Seon: The original Cheontae is the Korean manifestation of Tiantai, and the modern revival Cheontae is similar--there is still reverence for the Lotus Sutra, as well as devotion to Amitabul, Kwanseumbosal, and Daeseijibosal. Also, the vibrant colors in the art of Cheontae is an ...

Re: Differences between nichiren and pureland

no matter how long one recites "Gate gate paragate parasamgate svaha", no perfect wisdom will ever come from it. Astus, aren't you a Chán Buddhist? It is my understanding that the Chán Buddhists interpretation of such practices, at least since the time of Hanshan Deqing, but definitely even before ...

Re: Differences between nichiren and pureland

That is, one simply hears syllables and repeats those syllables without any consideration of meaning, like an audio record, or a parrot. Is that what you mean by Nichiren's interpretation of faith? The text called The Odaimoku of the Lotus Sutra by Nichiren seems to suggest the mere repetition with...

Re: Differences between nichiren and pureland

Thanks Astus for your comments. I'm sure Shinran had his reasons to explain things the way he did, but I don't know who his intended audience was. I think his audience in the KGSS were mostly learned (Tendai) scholars of the time, he was trying to show that the PL path has doctrinal Mahayana support...

Re: Differences between nichiren and pureland

Indeed Queequeg, the common medieval Tendai source shows itself especially in Nichiren, Shinran and Dogen. Also Ippen! I love Ippen. I recommend the book "No Abode" containing Ippen's sayings ... Another ex-Tendai monk, was a peculiar mix of Tendai, Zen and Pure Land. He had the hot blooded temperam...

Re: Differences between nichiren and pureland

Thank you Astus. I'd guess that the Nirvana Sutra doesn't mean faith in Amitabha, but rather faith in the sutra and/or buddha-nature. Well. What is Amitabha? According to Shinran, the Supreme Buddha has no form, but because formlessness is not comprehensible to us, forms are expediently taught, such...

Re: Differences between nichiren and pureland

Shinran's is sudden as well ... because his birth is already settled now, in the present.) That is "sudden" only in the sense of an assured birth, not in any actual attainment or realisation, unlike in Zen and Tiantai where immediacy means actual enlightenment. True. As for having shinjin is equal ...

Re: Differences between nichiren and pureland

Interesting post Astus. Q says Nichiren's teaching is sudden. This is actually a common trait in Kamakura Buddhism. Dogen's zazen is sudden (oneness of practice and enlightenment), Shinran's is sudden as well (although it might not seem so at first glance, but he explicitly and emphatically declares...

Re: Differences between nichiren and pureland

Excellent points Q. Really made me think. In my previous message I forgot to add that actually Ziporyn praises Nichiren for "making it up". It's not meant as a critique. He compared him to Jesus Christ in the same passage. Ziporyn's point is not that "Nichiren has no jutsification and his Daimoku ca...

Re: Differences between nichiren and pureland

Thanks Q Shinran b. 1173 - d. 1263. Nichiren b. 1222 - d. 1282. They were contemporaries, though its not clear they ever crossed paths. I am aware of that. In my construction of events, Shinran comes third. In reality, Nichiren comes last. I rearranged the succession so that it fits my narrative bet...

Re: Differences between nichiren and pureland

i. First let me state that I'm not posting this to be controversial. No problem. I don't understand why some people find problem with such "X vs Y" questions. Comparing traditions is a great way to learn. Can someone please explain to me the main differences between nichiren and pureland. I'll give...
