Re: Sermon by 25th HBS Head Priest

And still, my challenge is brushed aside by the Buddhist masters who claim their practices excellent medicine for the people of this latter degenerate age. I would think especially the HBS, Shingon, Gold Mountain Temple, and Tibetian masters would rush to defend their faith and practice against thi...

Re: Sermon by 25th HBS Head Priest

When I was in Japan I heard such claims, for instance, of some Tantric rituals being able to produce rain. What is the difference between that and magical thinking of primitive religions? Are these miracles repeatable? Do you believe in some miracles and disbelieve in others (like Jesus') - if so, w...

Re: Beholding the mind

The Shurangama Sutra showcases various methods for "mind-observation" and points to "observing self-nature through the organ of hearing" as the most appropriate for human beings of this age. The method consists of 1) entering the stream through sound (letting all sounds come and go without fixating ...

Re: Sermon by 25th HBS Head Priest

I've read on an official HBS website a while ago, they had a FAQ up, and the question was: "Why is my sickness not getting healed even though I'm chanting the Daimoku?" the answer was: "It's possible because you're not cleaning your Butsudan properly, or maybe because you worshipped in a non-HBS tem...

Re: Myoho Renge Kyo

It's neither a question, nor a reflection. It's just stating a fact. Yes, Nichiren added "Namu" to the title of the Lotus Sutra.
Not sure how this is supposed to "lessen anyone's belief"? It's literally the first thing people learn about Nichiren Buddhism.

Re: The Lotus sutra

The way Nichiren spoke was normal for the time, if you are unaware of Buddhist history you think he is singular. Not to defend jesse's insults - but it's not exactly true to say that some of Nichiren more vitriolic statements was just the norm at the time for monks... You don't see such things in S...

Lotus Sutra Reading Group

I want to announce we started reading the Lotus Sutra together at http://reddit.com/r/LotusGroup , it's an informal, non academic ,reading group where we will read it in a slow enough pace (a chapter every three weeks), meet on Google Hangouts, and discuss secondary literature, commentaries etc. You...

Re: Is better recite Nammyoho renge kyo or Namu Myoho Renge

Illarazza, you make fun of Shoshu's "transubstantiated totem" and deride the idea of people worshipping a "wooden plank" but aren't you doing exactly the same - with a syllable. A transubstantiated "u" phoneme. Not even like the Zen "Mu!" more like the Shingon's syllable-worship... "a"! A whole budd...

Re: Is better recite Nammyoho renge kyo or Namu Myoho Renge

2. Nam is ONE character. Can you show one single instance where Shoshu/SGI/whoever left one character completely out and used just ”南” instead of ”南無”? In writing? Because now you're talking about characters , not phonemes, so you should be able to demonstrate an instance where 無 was dropped and on...

It's definitely controversial to some sects, I'm not going to name one in particular I have in mind which also denounces the "True Entity of Life" as a forgery.

Re: The Nichiren Buddhism contemplates the statue of the Bud

A statue obviously points to the "person" expounding the Law; while the calligraphic mandala points to the Law itself , being expounded. The statue of the Buddha is of Greek origin, and is somehow "external"; you see a Buddha "from the outside", as it were. While the Gohonzon mandala is like a scree...

Re: The Nichiren Buddhism contemplates the statue of the Bud

I think you're using the word "gohonzon" incorrectly. What you mean is the mandala. "Gohonzon" is not just the calligraphic mandala.

Re: Nichiren as the True Buddha

One letter sent to Sairen-bo ( "True Entity of Life" ) contains this surprising reversal: it is the common mortal that is the true buddha , while Shakyamuni and Taho are "functions" thereof: The two Buddhas, Shakyamuni and Taho, are merely functions of the true Buddha, while Myoho-renge-kyo actually...

Re: Shurangama Sutra classification?

In Brook Ziporyn's Omnicentrism book, he articulates the difference between Shurangama's teaching and the LS teaching stressing that the Shurangama posits a "pure mind" as an absolute space, in which all that is, appears. The Chinese Chán is especially fond of the Shurangama, and that makes sense co...

Re: Is better recite Nammyoho renge kyo or Namu Myoho Renge

illaraza writes on his blog Throwing out the character Mu is to throw out a golden Buddha from the heart of the Lotus Sutra. Perhaps the SGI should remove the character Mu from their Gohonzons as they have from Nichiren's writings? Question: When the SGI chants Na m -Myo... what is the Chinese chara...

Shurangama Sutra classification?

How would the Nichiren / Lotus school classify the Shurangama Sutra? I'm not aware of Nichiren expressing his thoughts on this matter. But if we are to extrapolate? I am assuming its contents put it in the Separate Teaching category; like the Vimalakirti Nirdesa it teaches a Pure Mind separate from ...

Unique "Esoteric" Gohonzon With Vairochana Siddham

What makes the Ichinen Sanzen Mandara unique, is the inclusion of the siddham, or two esoteric sanskrit seed symbols, for the Buddha Mahavairochana (Dainichi). In Nichiren’s time, the eclectic-syncretic Jimon-Tendai and Shingon Schools, who ran the Buddhist temples at Kamakura Tsurugaoka Hachimaguj...
