Re: Taego Lineage Seminary

In fact we will need different options for lay people engaged in deep practice for the Dharma to spread irrespective of whether a person is engaged in married life or not. A lay person can indeed engaged in deep practice of course, but that doesn't mean he or she is qualify at all to be a Dharma in...

Re: Taego Lineage Seminary

to what extent have you lived in a monastery? None, as you know. And I've excluded monastic training from what I said because its of a different nature. That's just typical pedantic ways of thinking in Japan where seniority and certificates neatly configure the hierarchy. You know the Vinaya rule a...

Re: Taego Lineage Seminary

You sound like Daoxuan 道宣 there. He said the same thing: helping others is not possible without actual renunciation. If you are still grasping ferociously at worldly pleasures, how can you be expected to help others become free from them? To Daoxuan renunciation was not an institution, but a way of...

Re: Taego Lineage Seminary

But the Taego Order ordains only with the bodhisattva precepts and not the pratimoksa, so it's much like Japanese schools, except that they call them "married monks" to show the difference between "celibate monks" of the Jogye Order who take the full monastic precepts. "Married monk" is an oxymoron...

It is nice to know that Ocean Sky Monastery is very active :] I am not sure, I will ask the Shifu tomorrow about cundi Mantra, it could be that I haven't been in alot of chanting...

Re: Which is the side of the Protectors on the altar?

In my opinion, and personally I dont really think it matters. Just as long as it is a clean respectful place then it should be fine. It is more important of what inside our heart/mind than the physical :].

Re: Any1 practising Cundi mantra here?

Woohoo! Chung Tai! Hahahaha.... Seriously, you're the first Chung Tai Dharma-brother that I've seen in a forum :p I'm attending the branch in Manila. :-) They chant the Cundi Mantra everyday for their evening recitation, at 4 pm. Usually, they chant the Diamond Sutra, the Great Compassion Mantra, a...

Re: Any1 practising Cundi mantra here?

I did chant Cundi Bodhisattva mantra but not very often nor do I see many people do from my experience only of course. Maybe Cundi Bodhisattva doesn't have asa much affinity with saha world as other great bodhisattvas. Peace in Chan Bodhi, are you by any chance a disciple of Chung Tai Chan? Because...

Re: Dharma should not be made into a religion?

In any of the Mahayana sutras or those of the Tripitaka, did the Buddha ever directly advise against turning the Dharma into a religion or philosophy of sorts? Are there written records of such a statement in any of the sutras, or is this a reinterpretation or misinterpretation? Can something along...

Re: Repeating the name of Lotus sutra ?

When there are mantras passed down and spoken by enlightened one, we should strictly stick with that, and I'm a liberal-sort of person, but this is just to prevent many problems that can rise from that. Of course, I don't think anyone is actually suggesting we recite the Coca Cola Mantra in favor o...

Re: Repeating the name of Lotus sutra ?

This is my opinion only. I believe that we should really be careful with the "Dharma" we spread so that there would be less misunderstanding of Buddhism that ultimately contribute to its corruption. Words and sound is nothing until we give it a meaning, but the problem is that it is almost dangerous...

Re: Repeating the name of Lotus sutra ?

In my opinion, I think it is more beneficial to recite something that associate with Buddhism, or mantra by a great bodhisattva or Buddha. By doing so we are evoking our own Buddha Nature. Reciting something like Coca Cola can be a distraction to cultivation because it associate with worldly attachm...

Hello Kevin, The best meditation method for beginner is counting your breath. One important factor is right posture, it has alot of affects. Second is the breathing. The method that I am using is from Chung Tai Chan Monastery so I don't know what method you are doing. What I do is when I inhale, I d...

Prayers for the Oil Spill in Gulf of Mexico

I am sure that everybody is familiar with the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. I think it would be great if we can send some great and positive thoughts or prayers to this. I know that the most recent news claimed that it is being stopped. But prayers dedicate to all the harms it caused and death of...

Thank you the post and the video BFS. It is really saddening and almost scary listening to news on the oil spill and how much harm it is doing, and there isnt much we can do about it. The video helped alot and I pray that this would be over soon.

Re: Pure Land as a meditation practice?

Pure Land school believe that by reciting the name of Buddha Amitabha, one will take rebirth ins his land, but this is actually a form of meditation. The vow of Buddha Amitabha is that "recite his name with full concentration" will take rebirth in his land. The key word is full concentration and it ...
