Re: Kyabgon Gongma Trichen Rinpoche is the Mind Emanation of Guru Rinpoche

In Tibet they don't seem to have a problem to have several Padmasambhavas around. Why would they? It's a perfectly orthodox opinion to hold. You know, for any odd reason in Tibet tulkus are or were born in rich and influential families with much higher probability than in poor and not so influentia...

Re: Kyabgon Gongma Trichen Rinpoche is the Mind Emanation of Guru Rinpoche

Oh, I know yet another guy who is claimed to actually be Padmasambhava. Don't ask me which emanation that would be. Nevertheless, he's a lovely chap. In Tibet they don't seem to have a problem to have several Padmasambhavas around.

Re: What's the point of abusive gurus?

There is no point in abusive gurus. There might be a point of gurus not playing according to your expectations, but this is by far different from being abusive. Trying to justify abusive behavior in a guru claiming it's a teaching method simply continues the abuse (or tries to cover it). Trying to j...

Re: Dzogchen Community of Chogyal Namkhai Norbu

Why the heck am I always confused when I try to figure out the webcast schedule of Namkhai Norbu? Go to this page and it tells you that the next webcast is beginning of June (i.e. in the past): https://webcast.dzogchen.net/ At the same time this website says there's a retreat in Vienna the upcoming ...

Re: Kathmandu Help!!!!

By the way, another shop that has very nice thangkas displayed on their website is this one: https://luckythanka.com/. You'll find their address on the website. I have no idea if the thangkas are really all that nice once you are in their shop, but the ones online look really pretty.

Re: Kathmandu Help!!!!

When I was in Kathmandu in 2008, by far the best Thangkas you could get in the Dharmapala Thangka Center located at Annapurna Arcade, Shop 3, Durbar Marg. I don't think there is an official website except this German one: http://www.thangka.de/Dharmapala/impressum.htm. We bought 4 wonderful mandalas...

Re: Deathbed visions

The distinction between internal and external ist just as simplistic. In fact, it is redundant to the distinction between inside and outside, real and unreal and so in. Our inability to even consider a third option, I.e. something that is neither or both, is just revealing. For example the outside a...

Re: Deathbed visions

What I find odd is the simple assumption that the visions are either real or not, either hallucinations or not. Tertium non datur. Our inability to even consider a third option is striking. Of course if I see something it is subjectively real but perhaps objectively unreal. Hence, we lack language t...

Re: Deathbed visions

I never have "visions" or anything alike, I don't believe that there exist siddhis. I even doubt the highly elaborate models given in Tibetan Buddhism about the dying process. However, when my grandfather died I could "see" quite a few "people" gathered around the deathbed. And not just "people", al...

Re: "You need to know Tibetan to achieve enlightenment in this life"

In this degenerate age Western Buddhists are constantly preoccupied with talking about how incredibly hard it is to become enlightened. It’s a rather silly form of negative pride you find a lot with Western Buddhists. Interestingly, Eastern Buddhists are usually concerned with much more worldly goal...

Re: How to NOT annoy the guru?

How is cursing rivals and having enemies Buddhist? You should read more. There are plenty of Buddhist tantras giving spells and advice how to curse, kill etc. Of course, successful application presumes you are indeed a practitioner of the tantric vehicle. Which presumes you have the right view as w...

Re: Astrology?

In my opinion, it is a waste of time unless you have received relevant teachings. Why would you recite hindu mantras when basic Mahayana practice is much more effective for any purpose, including for avoiding negativities related to astrology or anything else. Does one ask the enlightened deities t...

Re: Astrology?

As has been pointed out many times in this forum, Shiva is considered a protector deity in Vajrayana. Also Rahula is a protector deity that rules over all planets known to ancient Tibetan astrology. Usually, one does not start protector deity practices unless one has practiced other Buddhist protect...

Well, since this is the Dzogchen forum, the answer to the original question is probably something along these lines. Explanation in terms of meditative practices: First, do the preliminaries. Then, receive pointing out instructions on the true nature of mind. Next, start practicing Trek Chöd plus th...

Re: Did the 84 mahasiddhas authorize others to teach?

Very interesting: So far nobody presented a strong case why teaching authorisation was part of the lineage system in the early days of Vajrayana. This settles an uncertainty I had on this topic for quite some time in a, for me, surprising way. Well, there is a formal way of authorization to teach t...

Re: Did the 84 mahasiddhas authorize others to teach?

And a few ones of them - according to Buddhist sources - were actually non-Buddhists. AFAIK the non-Buddhist ones are not described as having actually attained Mahasiddhi. Isn't this fascinating: Some Buddhist authors - we don't know much about them - writing about some mahasiddhas. Admitting that ...

Re: Did the 84 mahasiddhas authorize others to teach?

afaik mahasiddhas were once buddhist monks (shravakas and/or boddhisattvas in training) and top scholars on dharma that arrived a point... Nah, not really. They really had all sorts of social backgrounds, by far not all of them were learned. And a few ones of them - according to Buddhist sources - ...
