Re: Career Advice for a Young Nyingmapa

The lamas you mention are the nice ones. I've seen situations where the lama has some idea, and keeps stuck to it, no matter whether it's realistic or not to be implemented. Then, if you dare questioning the lama's idea, you end up in a really awkward position, because s/he might take it as a perso...

Re: Career Advice for a Young Nyingmapa

Having money will indeed make you we one with sanghas and get you more access to teachers than, well, not having money. It can also leave you doubting your teachers because it will expose you to the business side of the dharma; and it can also create friction with sanghas when they pursue you for f...

Re: Role of meditative absorption in Tibetan Buddhism

However, there has been less emphasis or outright ignorance towards Dhyanas by modern teachers of Tibetan Buddhism. Who are these teachers that you're talking about who are ignorant of meditation? I have never come across them personally. Perhaps I've spent too much time hanging out with Kagyupas.....

Re: Career Advice for a Young Nyingmapa

I recommend working at an investment bank, or at least in management consulting. You'll end up making a lot of money, which allows you to funnel into any direction you like. There are plenty of buddhist teachers who are very keen on finding financial supporters for their own project ideas - from bu...

Re: Practical difference between Bön and Nyingma Dzogchen

Reading the Bonpo Heart Sutra, and being exposed to a bit of their "alternative history" narratives put me in about the same boat. I value the Bon teachings I've received greatly, but I cannot get past some of their historical claims, especially the triumphalism over Buddhism, when so much of their...

Re: Time For A Republic.

Elizabeth is our queen too and I don't think you're going to get anywhere at all with a push for a republic (and neither are we) while she wears the crown, because she has earned a lot of respect as a public figure - public servant, almost - and leader. I'm not sure. Someone needs to look into the ...

Re: Time For A Republic.

Now that his brother has children, it's not going to happen, but it would have been entertaining if the line of succession had passed through him. You would have had a king who was not a member of the royal family by blood, with a mixed-race wife. The monarchists would have been profoundly distresse...

I have no problem with people who have no devotion towards Sogyal. I also have no problem with those who remain devoted to him. It just isn't any of my business.
This is good advice. Thank you.

It would not have screened out anyone anyway. You see, we are Anglos. We believe in laws. We live in nations where laws are above persons. I think you’re misunderstanding me on this point. The poster that I was replying to was suggesting that maybe Lakhar beating up the nun was in some way not abus...

Re: Our Anti-War President

Obviously the Israeli lobby does not like Iran. And interestingly, though not surprisingly, Trump has been all buddy-buddy with the Saudis. I think the Israel-Iran thing is more complex in reality than how it is generally perceived. Remember that Israel and Iran were allies within the working lifet...

Re: The Self-Arisen Vidya Tantra and The Self-Liberated Vidya Tantra A Translation of the Rigpa Rang Shar and Rigpa Rang

That is not in fact the criteria of so-called unconventional behavior. No, but it’s a relatively easy test to apply that would have screened out Lakhar, Mukpo Jr and others. And none of this would even need discussing if people didn’t fetishize ‘crazy’ behavior in the first place. The point is that...

Heard a rumor recently that the nun Sogyal Rinpoche punched in the stomach remains devoted to him to this day. Maybe this is true. Maybe it is true, but she is delusional. I don’t know. Well yes, there is always doubt. But when you see people claiming that their lama engages in unconventional behav...

Seems there was an agreement to let Iran retaliate by making a missile attack on some empty bases. Iran warned Iraq who warned the UK and UK etc. However, a civilian 737 headed from Iran to Ukraine has gone down with the deaths of all on board. 176 dead reported on UK news. At the moment, Iran is c...

Re: The Self-Arisen Vidya Tantra and The Self-Liberated Vidya Tantra A Translation of the Rigpa Rang Shar and Rigpa Rang

With the benefit of some time having passed since the events, I did go back and read KNR's comments again. His choice of words is very careful indeed. It's a lot more skillful than some of the other people who have commented on this. People were upset because (b) he seemed to be blaming the victims ...

Re: History of tantra

I'm aware. I'm asking where his description is found. If you're looking for an account of the Buddha teaching tantra, you won't find it in the Pali Canon: you will find accounts of Buddhas manifesting in various forms to teach tantras in those tantras or associated literature. However these are thi...
