Re: Chetsun Nyingthig Lojong

Yes and he was quite clear about what that should involve - he gave the relevant lungs in every single teaching Some other lungs he gave if requested but not often Some other things he was very careful about (notably the Longsal terma teachings) You’re correct but it wasn’t intended to be a free-fo...

Re: Chetsun Nyingthig Lojong

I don't recall him mentioning that with Nyingthig Yabzhi, which do you mean? I can only recall thogal instructions in general. That's what I meant (thogal instructions). You're right, the stated requirement is met by having received RTW. However I think this is one of those "just because you can, d...

Re: Lost texts

Maybe there's some lost stuff in India/Nepal that could be uncovered. I hear Mongolia also has treasure troves of untranslated / undocumented texts. During the purges a Mongolian monk took a huge amount of books, ritual items, etc., mostly passed down from Zanabazar, out into the desert and buried ...

National library of China, BeiDa, MinzuDa. They aren’t restricted, with an invitation and proper academic credentials you can just go look at them. The problem is that there is a lot of uncategorized material sitting around in storerooms and that’s where the interesting texts would be. Unfortunatel...

Don't have either of those.
Then your question would seem to be a little...academic?

Re: Lost texts

there are a lot of Mahayana sutras references by e.g. Shantideva which no longer exist. Thanks, but can you give the specific references please? I'm guessing these are in his main text, but where specifically? I'll make note of them. Do you have any idea where these texts could be found today? Ones...

Re: Lost texts

the Library of Sakya, which has thousands of manuscripts that are just mouldering... Bejing My understanding is these are kept behind a barrier, and they're not allowing access... the first one I mean. I wouldn't know where to look in Beijing. I'll have to research it. National library of China, Be...

Re: Lost texts

Let's say you had a ticket to go to India or China or some other place that was predominantly Buddhist a long time ago. Let's say there's a team of archaeologists, linguists, and monks who will go with you. A few years from now, you journey out there. Your job is to find long-lost Buddhist texts. W...

Re: Yogachara, the illusory nature of appearances and anxiety

Lately, I have been doing an online Tergar course named "Exploring Reality". They explain the four major philosophical schools within Tibetan Buddhism. When we got to Yogachara and they explained that everything is mind and that all appearances are illusory this generated a strong sense of anxiety....

Aemilius, I've got a bridge to sell you. Great idea, thanks, what would I do with it? I don't own the river that is flowing 30 m away from the house where I live. Yesterday I saw a flock swans flying to the north-east, about 12 of them. My house https://www.google.com/maps/place/Karjalammentie+15,+...

can be, but from some info hindu practices came first. there is a topic here somewhere that phowa comes from hindu practices. Malcolm said that Sakya believes Cakrasamvara Tantra didn't come from Siddhartha Gautama. i'd like to know if there is academic consensus as to the origins of Cakrasamvara T...

Re: Renewable Energy

Ala "the road". Doesn't have to be. That's up to us. But it might well be. Billions are going to die, that's inescapable. The planet can support less than half its current population of humans. We're hitting the constraints on that in many ways at present - availability of water, arable land, energ...

Re: A More Precise Teaching on Emptiness?

Are you trying to understand what is absolutely necessary from a practice perspective; or trying to understand the original texts on the topic; or trying to understand all the debates that took place over the centuries?

You will get a very different answer depending on your objectives.

Re: Chetsun Nyingthig Lojong

Norbu Rinpoche didn't seem to have a problem with that. (we are talking about the mind trainings, not the entire Chetsun Nyingthig of course) There are topics in the nyingtig yabzhi for which he didn’t want people doing self-study. I don't recall him mentioning that with Nyingthig Yabzhi, which do ...

Re: Chetsun Nyingthig Lojong

Wouldn't the last part qualify him? While there are still masters in the world who can confer the empowerments and instructions for this, I think someone would be very poorly advised to instead try to learn and practice it from a book. Norbu Rinpoche didn't seem to have a problem with that. (we are...

Re: The sense in long rituals for non-Tibetans?

There's various possible answers for this. There are various different ways of conducting rituals - elaborate, unelaborate, etc. - because people have different capacities and inclinations. Just because you personally don't like it, that doesn't mean there isn't value in doing it. Moreover if you do...

Re: What are you doing about the coronavirus?

That was written before the Civil War. Lincoln was assassinated. Slavery was abolished as the consequence of that war, but the South and Southern sympathizers in other states still refuse to accept the loss. We are still fighting that race war. The alternative interpretation would be - they won. Th...
