Ervin, Buddhist teachings are more than just the sutras.

Huh! That's what I get for not checking the endnotes. My bad.

Re: Khathok Dudul Dorje's Saraswati

From what I understand, Saraswati practice is dangerous if not undertaken correctly; if done improperly, it can cause memory loss and even madness. Really, where did you hear that? I read it in a book called Buddhist Goddesses of India by Miranda Shaw. It has an entire chapter dedicated to Saraswat...

Re: Khathok Dudul Dorje's Saraswati

Well, an email was sent out concerning this event with the following information: When Lama Tharchin Rinpoche gave this empowerment in 2005 he said, "Saraswati, a Buddha in feminine form, bestows siddhis of knowledge and wisdom. This powerful practice is normally kept secret, but I am offering it t...

Topic locked. It would be best if you asked a teacher about this. The internet can't answer everything. ;)

Don't know if it's in the Vimalakirti Sutra or not, but that's a fairly common teaching in some schools, I think...

Re: Who is drawn to Buddhism?

I don't know. I only speak for my own experience. Most of the Buddhists I've met in person actually seemed more afflicted by the sufferings of those around them; they're motivated by compassion and hope, not despair. I try to be as well.

Re: The Buddhas Urna ''one''

I sincerely doubt that the urna symbolizes any kind of self. It's only one of many marks of a buddha, according to the sutras. The ushnisha is also a very prominent mark, and I can't see how it symbolizes anything like what you're talking about. Sorry to be blunt, but I really can't see it.

Re: What is superstition?

I feel I should also speak from personal experience, then. When I first came to this forum, I talked a lot about my relationship with a deity. I don't talk about it here anymore, but that doesn't mean she's gone away. There are also other experiences with deities and...spirits...that I've never talk...

As someone who's had...strange...experiences, I am deeply uncomfortable with the term "superstition" when it is applied to long-standing social, cultural and/or religious practices.

Re: Alms round in Mahayana countries

Thanks for this--I learned something new today. Do you know about how many monks and nuns make these rounds? And how many monasteries and temples are involved in it? Do you think that this is a general practice across Mahayana, or an outlier? There are similar practices in Japan, I think. I had the...

Re: Refraining from Halloween

In my family, it's a time of practicing generosity. You give candy to EVERYONE, costume or no...whether you think they "deserve" it or not. Kids come in by the carload in our neighborhood, from all over town. It's a good way to practice impartial caring. Give just as much candy to the costumeless ki...
