Re: Converting to Buddhism from Christianity

My advice is try to find common ground between your faith and theirs. When they bring up Christian stuff, see if there's any of it that you can agree with - for example, both religions teach the importance of virtue, good deeds, and compassion. Also, try to have compassion for how this may be threat...

Re: Who is my root lama? Please help!

So my question is this, who is Vajradhara for people who do not have a root lama? Could he be the lama you have taken refuge with but do not have the opportunity to work closely with? Could he be a future lama that you have not met yet? Could he be a teacher from the past like Milarepa or Lord Jigt...

Re: Chenresig - Ontological Dilemmas

Good answer, Nilasarasvati! I would like to add - Khalil Bodhi, do you understand the concept of Sambhogakaya? These deities are not justified by their historical reality - rather, they are justified by the realization of the sages who revealed their teachings, and through the experience of the line...

Re: Dzogchen Community of Chogyal Namkhai Norbu

What I remember fro mthe end, is that Khyentse Yeshe said his father is in good health and so he's not going to teach and if anyone invites him they should make sure it's not about him but about what he can share with them for the DC. Hence what he teaches NOW (because he actually had a very differ...

Re: How does deity yoga benefit others?

"Can imagining that you're sending out light beams to other beings when you visualize yourself in deity form actually benefit them in real life? And how is this possible?" Yes, because no phenomena exist apart from your mind. This is a fundamental "theory" of Buddhism, and also Western metaphysics....

Re: Mandarava practice

Thanks magnus, that is really helpful. I may also get the dvd to help. In the shang shung calendar, for increasing protective capacity it says to do sitatapatra sutra and amitayus sutra, Do you know if you need empowerment for sitatapatra sutra? Never heard ChNN give that one before. I've heard tha...

Re: Vajrayana and PTSD

I mention Vajrayana because of the inherent power of these practices to transform affliction. Obviously the specific Inner and Outer Tantras would in no way be suitable for anyone with dehabilitating PTSD. But maybe some Chenrezig, Medicine Buddha, or Green Tara practices? Also, Yantra Yoga seems l...

Re: Converting to Buddhism from Christianity

Don't convert. Because if you convert you will become a buddhist. Better to work at discovering your own nature. You don't have to become anything. You only have to understand why you practice whatever you practice. If you want a new identity better apply for a deed poll to the Royal Courts of Just...

Re: Unpacking the Adi-Buddha?

The Adi Buddha simply refers to the fact that Buddha nature has never and can never be affected by samsaric stains. It's just another way of saying that enlightenment is non-fabricated. Because you can never manufacture your enlightenment, your enlightenment has always been present. "Adi Buddha" is ...

Re: Basic Question

Great question. Does anyone experience these ups and downs? Yes, everyone does. And if so, is there a way I can help my practice to be more consistent and stable? Yes, keep practicing. Don't judge the success of your practice by what you experience. Instead, ask yourself, "Did I do my best given the...

Hi everyone, This is going to be a mixed bag post I suppose so here goes. I've talked about Ratnasambhava before, this blessed Buddha is somehow firmly fixed in my daily life. There really isn't a day where I don't think about Lord Ratnasambhava, his merits and virtues, his southern realm and his c...

My two favorite beginners' books are Introduction to Tantra, by Lama Yeshe, and A Beginner's Guide to Tibetan Buddhism, by Bruce Newman. They are both very easy to make sense of for Westerners, IMO.

I also want to add that the experiential understanding about karma, and how it is connected to the body, that I got from the Goenka retreat was really unique, and something I have not come across in Vajrayana teachings.
