Re: Magician's illusion

I think the kind of "Magic" that Je Tsongkapa is talking about is something we'd call "group hypnosis." By the "spell" of the magician, the audience sees a hallucination. People who come into the show late were not induced to hallucinate, therefore they don't. That's the sense I've gotten when askin...

Re: Nyala Pema duddul's Tulku

Seems to be the difference between Liberation and Buddhahood--
Liberation (Nibbana) seems to imply no returning; Buddhahood
seems to imply being beyond limits and of infinite benefit.

Re: Divination

[quote="Yeshe"} The mind can be trained for divination - dowsers for example improve through training. But how mich innate ability was there in the first place? I don't know how oracles ares elected in Vajrayana, nor whether they are trained, no more than I know whether Lama Dawa had innate abilitie...

Re: Nyala Pema duddul's Tulku

Perhaps the more technically correct term in English
would be "emanation." Some high Lamas are not
called Tulkus in the west but emanations-- since their
incarnational lineage is not active within, for example,
a particular monastery.

Re: Great living female lamas

Its nice to see both Tibetan women and Western women in this list. I'd include Chagdud Khandro, as well as many women that Chagdud Rinpoche ordained as yogini lamas, at least one of which is a Tulku. There's also Lama Yeshe Wangmo, ordained by Lama Tharchin Rinpoche. Although, consistent with tradit...

Re: Discussing About One's Guru Openly

My precious Lama advises us to beware of Dharma Politics and not speak of specifics except with those following similar paths. Beyond that, he's not superstitious, Therefore, I don't mind people knowing I'm Nyingma-- even though I participate with other orders in a rime spirit. Nyingma friends know ...

Re: Divination

It is not unusual for Tibetans to seek a divination each year near Losar. I do not, as a westerner, consult oracles that frequently. I have found it useful to clarify aspects of practice like dates, places to retreat, auspicious prereqs. for success in particular practices, health issues, etc. I spo...

Re: Books which give an overview of Nyingma?

H. H. Dungse Thinley Norbu Rinpoche wrote a thin volume called "Small Golden Key" which, although very concise, does have an overview of the nine yanas, as well as an explanation of each of the 100 deities of the Shirto Mandala. All of his books are good for understanding the view especially of vajr...

Re: Martsang Kagyu and other smaller Kagyus alive?

Martsang was absorbed by the Palyul tradition of the Nyingma.
Tshalpa is now Gelug and administrated by Sera.

But several lineages such Barom, drikung, Drukpa, Taklung, and Shangpa are still alive.

Re: understanding transsexuality in buddhism three schools

Post-op Transsexuals have in fact been ordained as monastics
in Tibetan tradition. There is no problem from a vinaya PoV.

Mahayana can be understood to hold that giving pleasure to
others is the main point.

Vajrayana's essence can be said to be maintaining Pure Vision.

Re: Practice texts? 8 Herukas and/or Mindroling Vajrasattva

Nyangral Nyima Ozer's Kagye Deshek Dupa is a main practice of Mndrolling.

Terdak Lingpa told his disciples that they could demonstrate their devotion
to him by maintaining this practice. Therefore it is central to their annual
cycle of retreats.

Re: Owl-Headed Dakini interpretation of 4 Noble Truths

Concerning Ngakpa Chogyam, also called Ngakchang Rinpoche, there are many people who have opinions. I don't think many of these people actually ever met him. Yet they "know." They certainly haven't met any of the Tibetan Lamas who speak highly of him. Suffice it to say that in some circles there see...
