Re: How do gay Buddhists explain this one?

I posted a link to Jose Cabezon's article in Buddhadharma earlier. I think it's worth reading in full, but this extract seems relevant here http://archive.thebuddhadharma.com/issues/2009/summer/sex.php . The obvious historical question then becomes this: If the early doctrine of sexual misconduct is...

Well, at least it makes a change from 'Fernando Torres - the reluctant goalscorer' - a more familiar BBC story!

Re: How do gay Buddhists explain this one?

So there are a lot of gay-friendly sanghas around nowadays. Yet again I find contradictions between what so many Buddhists believe and what is in the sutras: "If sex is practised under the inappropriate times (times not allowed by precepts), [at] inappropriate place[s] (places not allowed by precep...

Re: Icke: How to Free Your Mind

The only really interesting thing about Mr Icke is that he was formerly a professional footballer. He was the goalkeeper for one of the lower league sides (?Hereford) way back when. Goalkeepers are often thought to be a bit odd, but nothing like this...

Re: Exploring Tibetan Buddhism through a foreign language?

Before you jump into Russian, have you tried Stephen Hodge's introduction to classical Tibetan? It's inexpensive and covers a lot of ground, with exercises taken from standard Tibetan Buddhist texts. Not so easy if you don't have a natural gift for languages, but I don't think any of the alternative...

Oops, back to topic!
My name is from the Swedish nobility, means tiger-shield if anyone would like to know.

/magnus
At first glance, I read it as tiger's child.

Either way, a good name.

Re: Death at Tibetan Buddhist meditation retreat in Arizona

Gdon attacking retreatants and causing them to behave in bizarre ways is not unheard of. For example, Sachen Kunga Nyingpo was attacked by Gyalpo Pehar, for which he resorted to the meditation of Acala. Likewise, Ngagpa Yeshe Dorje was assigned by Dudjom Rinpoche to do retreat in a cave where sever...

There's a useful description of the Zhije system in Ringu Tulku's book about Rime.

Re: How are teachers like Mangos?

The best in my experience are honey mangoes from Pakistan. They come shipped in really crappy cardboard boxes and often look a bit worse for wear on the outside. Nonetheless, they are delicious. Other kinds look much more promising, but turn out to be a bit insipid, or tasteless. Not sure what this ...

Re: empowerments & the mac daddies

I get that empowerment is the alpha and omega of vajrayana. Sipping coffee and sunshine this morning, I find myself wondering: How restrictive are the opportunities to receive such empowerments? What I am thinking of is that, besides all the flesh and blood gurus we have walzting the saha world, wh...

If the discussions are outside the norms for Dharma Wheel, the conversations can be carried on with PM or private messages. Most ...
