Re: What is Mount Meru?

Is it possible to believe in Mount Meru and believe in contemporary science? This. Pretty much the same applies to all aspects of Buddhist cosmology. But it’s perhaps important to see that saying something is not literally true does not mean that it has no meaning or is unimportant. Some of the mos...

Re: What is Mount Meru?

Or as the Dalai Lama said, if Buddhism and science disagree, science should be deferred to. Sadhaka, great post. Cosmology in Buddhism is wonderful to study. One thing is that the different planes are all said to 'overlap,' so to speak. "In the vertical cosmology, the universe exists of many worlds ...

:techproblem: However, as an addendum, Buddha said our own logic and heart should tell us what is true. So - don't believe just because teacher, scripture, authority say something, if it doesn't accord to the heart... Anyway, cosmology in Buddhism is a interesting thing. https://en.wikipedia.org/wik...

Re: What is Mount Meru?

If Buddha was truthful, then we are in the Pure Land right now. Seen clearly, the world is pure land - full of gems, jewels, and this sort of thing. Here and now. He said, if a person cannot see the sun, does it mean the sun is not there? Mount Meru may be like this. As this is Mahayana, forum, ther...

The Six Paramitas

Nothing special or new, just wanted to talk about them. I probably shouldn't post every time in the Lounge so I thought I would post it here.. So for those who didn't know, they are often translated as 'the six perfections', although that is not the only translation. I like simple very much, and the...

Re: Does Meditation help with Sleeping Subconscious?

Yes. Activity is helpful too. Yoga and so forth, in fact Buddhism has a unique style of yoga. But yes, meditation, especially long term practice of it, can make a lot of difference in sleep. Sleep can be a really good indicator of our lives. Conscious and subconscious are connected or part of a whol...

Dzogchungpa, please post :)

Dear friend, Just wishing to say, would love to hear from you, even if just a few words saying hi. Miss your joviality and light.. Remember you saying, the Heart Sutra can be expressed in a single letter, 'A', but you prefer as it can be expressed with silence, but I want to say please say a few wor...

Re: Chess

I play chess on my iPhone, set to a level where I can win, but not always, and not that easily. It's set to ELO 1600 if that means anything. It's a nice little app called ChessPro . Regrettably nobody in my social circle plays chess, otherwise I'd play real people from time to time. "d love to see ...

Re: Chess

I'm not a good player, but I dearly love the game and have played since I was a kid. These days I have no one play, I get in maybe one game per year:( I finally figured it out -- non-rated games!!! . . It took me quite a while to discover that. haha. o I had played all rated games only, which is fi...

Re: Compassion: An End To Violence?

If you want to end violence, start with what you eat. Buddha was not uncertain at all in his saying animals should be treated with loving kindness equally. I.e., non violence applies to animals as well as humans. The Surangama sutra covers this in detail.

Re: Compassion: An End To Violence?

Pretty good answer smcj. Another point is the paradoxical Boddhisattva vow. Limitless beings, but a vow to save them all.

Re: Chess

It's possible to do both. But, being affected like that is understandable. I've found studying a lot will overcome it, and also being aware and meditating very much. Also walking a lot, (1-2 hours each day, or several days a week is great), can be very helpful. The idea is to be unaffected, just lik...

Re: Chess

A0 is the nickname, so to speak, of AlphaZero. It looks funny but it's shorter and easier. A0 changed chess, and it's like flight, or telephones, or something similar in it's advance, in that nothing similar to it has ever been seen. Games and positions of A0 are unique, and so far beyond anything e...
