Re: Chess

I'm not a good player, but I dearly love the game and have played since I was a kid. These days I have no one play, I get in maybe one game per year:( I have been teaching my 10 year old how to play and she is getting into it. That is really awesome. That is a fairly perfect age to begin, and the s...

Re: Chess

That's really awesome, Keith. Do you get to take your kid to any tournaments? Those are really great for children. Fun and learning concentration, and spatial logic and all the rest that is chess.

Do you have any favorite games? Over your career.

Re: Chess

At the moment I'm working on 4 by A0, that are less than 60 moves each.

Previously, ones like Smyslov, Botvinnik, Alekhine, Bronstein, and later ones were focuses for my study.

Chessmetrics.com is a nice website.

Re: Chess

A good number. Not very specific, but as I mentioned I discovered, studying A0's games is kind of beautiful. Not easy to describe how much it is beneficial... Memorizing them, is really my best. I grew up playing tournaments, my first one was 10 round, 3 days when I was 11 or 12, and the games were ...

Re: A small practice but a good one

That sounds like a good one :) I also am reminded of the idea, to view all as Buddhas, but, another way may be to see all with no blame... And, to cultivate metta with meditation and so forth... To speak with loving kindness as muuh as possible.. It helps to travel, when we see someplace new, it is ...

Chess

Namaste, Hope all are well. Wanted to talk about chess if anyone is interested.. I'm a somewhat strong player.. I've won vs an IM, or international master, maybe 6, or 7 years ago.. My rating has always been lower, because I haven't focused on that, and because I haven't played as much as studying. ...

Re: A small practice but a good one

Yes. Another thing is to look with clarity, or, emptiness. If the heart is clear, then it's more possible to see clearly. To look without clouding thoughts, etc. And/or, with mindfulness of Buddha. I.e., inwardly remembering Amitabha Buddha, or meditating on emptiness as in Zen, etc., Then looking a...

Re: What is Art ?

That's pretty cool PeterC. It reminds me of a Japanese saying, 'go up on the mountain but then come back down.' There is an interesting idea about truth that says everything exists. If something can be thought up, it exists, if only as idea. Idk similar. A video game character is true, and real, and...

Re: Trauma and the public mind

Love and compassion are always the best backdrop. It helps to speak about ideas rather than people. I.e., "great minds discuss ideas, small minds discuss people" type of deal. To speak positively about good things, etc, is the medicine for the world. To speak with kindness and compassion is healing ...

Re: Trauma and the public mind

Not long ago a teenager in Maylaysia jumped to her death after an Instagram poll voted more that she should do so, when she asked, 'Should I live or die.'

So, no, we are not too coddly, Q. We are not suffering from too much empathy. Especially online.

Re: Do Bodhisattvas and non-historical Buddhas "exist"?

Yes. Pretty good question as it gets us talking about it. Faith and belief are important questions. Should we have it? How much? And in what? Pretty important. Check out Shinran's writing on it. 'No-doubt mind' is fascinating. ("Of the various interpretations by Shinran, his psychological interpreta...
