Isabella's Lullaby

Lately I've been watching a lot of anime, and reading some manga. This one song from a anime/manga called "the promised neverland" really struck a cord with me(no pun intended). I find it to be just hauntingly beautiful, and i wanted to share it.

Amida heard the whispering of my dreams. ( free form poetry)

there are times when a wretched darkness overtakes me, My failure stands clear before me as a cloudless night among a witness of stars scarring my good intentions. Screaming and sobbing with tears, hot, and sticky running down my plump cheeks. I heave over myself, panic stricken. Bracing myself i wa...

Re: Jodo Shu, Ethics, and being inept

I think the Japanese schools would generally say that your heart and intent aren’t the operative agents as opposed to the Name and the Vow. Ippen says for example “Birth, then, does not depend on the attitude of heart and mind; it is through the Name that you will be born”. Honen in general states ...

Re: Jodo Shu, Ethics, and being inept

So ultimately all you can really do is encourage good conduct and discourage bad, but if you imply that being bad can overpower the vow then you contradict the sutras, so you kind of just have to accept it. Though generally speaking it’s held that the nembutsu in itself will be beneficial for peopl...

Re: Jodo Shu, Ethics, and being inept

Thanks to nembutsu over time, there is the development of ethical attitudes (Three Minds) and ethical activities (Four Modes). So whether or not you uphold the precepts, this practice and its related benefits are available. The role of the precepts is different in this way. This quote made me made ...

Re: Jodo Shu, Ethics, and being inept

Can you clarify what "balance" means? As far as overviews, Instruction to Zensho Bo (p. 253 "Promise") is a short one. Dialogue on the Essentials of Nembutsu (p. 185) is rather longer but covers the essentials, including for example the Parable of the White Path Hey Myoan, sorry for my ambiguity. B...

Re: Teachings of Honen Volume 2 - Day 10 Post by Admin_PC » Wed Aug 09, 2017 10:20 am Day 10 - The Profound Heart According to Master Shan-tao, first, we must believe that we are karmically evil mortals; second, we must believe in the Essential Vow of Buddha Amitabha. This is because if only belief...

Jodo Shu, Ethics, and being inept

Hey everybody, I was reflecting this afternoon while reciting nembustu about how in my life in all the religious forms it has taken i was completely inept at practicing the standards of ethics as it was required and taught. It could be that i personally navel gaze far to much, and seeing small imper...

Re: C.S. Lewis and Shin

Hey SonamTashi, I wanted to make a quick comment on your last post since you brought my opinion up. My personal opinion of Jodo Shinsu ,and Josho Adrian Cirlia has changed and primary because of your posting along with Myoan. So i want to personally thank you, i truly believe your 100% correct conce...

Re: C.S. Lewis and Shin

I want to thank everyone for the discussion, and thoughts. I'm going to bow out of the forum from now on thought. My teacher Josho Adrien Cirlea has asked me to do so, and out of deep respect I submit to his guidance as the Jodo shinshu priest I defer to on Dharma questions and teaching. Sonantashi,...

Re: C.S. Lewis and Shin

Agreed that Dan74 is sincere, bright, educated and deeply concerned about what constitutes Buddhism and the path to Bodhi. Also agreed that Shin is not Zen. It's not even Jodo Shu, as Shinran broke from the slight traces of self power that remained in Honen's teaching. Other Power reliance-only is ...

Re: The struggles of being bombu

I can't say I've made any real headway in giving push-back to the worse angels of my nature. I used to get guilted about my negativity but now I just accept it as my bombu nature doing its own thing. I can't be Enlightened in this life, so I don't try to be; I can't be a saint in this life, so I do...

The struggles of being bombu

Sometimes, I find myself gasping at the cruelty of my own heart in reflection of moments gone by, and yet i realize in this age of Mappo i am helpless to change it. I find myself reciting nembustu as my thoughts accuse me yet when i think of Amida's smile and acceptance of me regardless of who i am ...

Re: C.S. Lewis and Shin

Good observations. Yes, we don't want to push the similarities of Shin and Christianity too far, or we falsify both of them. A common embrace of "perfect faith" in opposition to "salvation by works" seems to be the greatest similarity between both systems. Both Christians and "Shinners" rely on a s...

Re: C.S. Lewis and Shin

Hey everyone, C.S. Lewis is a pretty interesting character and IMO a rather important figure in the development of Lay theology in the church of England from which he hailed along with American evangelicalism. Everyone today in the western Christian world wants to claim him for there own, the reform...

its Np, im glad to share. Maybe someone who is going through what we went through will come across this page and it will be a help to them. May all beings share in the merits of Amida Buddha, awaken bodhicitta, and be born in the western pure land of peace and bliss.
