Re: When the villagers gave up hunting...

It makes little sense for them to swear to stop killing and then keep killing their own animals. Tibetans may eat a lot of meat in general, but that does not mean that one cannot be a vegetarian in Tibet. They can keep eating dairy stuff, champa or whatever it is called, etc., they do not rely on m...

Re: Is Dharma practice a struggle for you?

It is a struggle to find time/energy to sit down and do the practice sometimes but I invariably feel better after doing so.

Re: When the villagers gave up hunting...

They probably still had to slaughter yaks and sheep that they owned, they just didn't go out hunting wild animals.

Sounds to me like 是名比丘根波羅蜜因緣知果波羅蜜,果波羅蜜因緣知人波羅蜜。 This is called, monks, difference of faculties on account of causes and conditions informing the difference of fruits, the difference of fruits on account of causes and conditions informing the difference of persons. Does this lower tantra result in Bu...

Re: This Western Dharma experiment has been unsuccessful

Re: householder donations. The best thing one could do is take a page out of business/marketing: interview some existing Westerners who do actually donate to support their favoured centres/monasteries without the expectation of receiving teachings/retreats/etc and try to find out what motivated them...

Re: This Western Dharma experiment has been unsuccessful

I'm going to be a real Pollyanna and say something like what I heard a US journalist say one time in regards to there being lots of discovery of mistakes and untruths in journalism. Rather than being a sign of failure, it's a sign of success to see truth is revealed. It shows the "system" is workin...

Re: This Western Dharma experiment has been unsuccessful

I feel like in general, the main aspiration for laypeople in the West is to become serious practitioner-yogis, which overall limits Buddhism's ability to scale and spread, because most people are unable to do this. In Asia, both today and historically, laypeople could aspire to be sponsors of the te...

The "mindfulness" materialists pretty much are modern Carvakas, not Bauddhas.

This marks the end of an era of Dharma in the modern world methinks.

May all of us Vajra siblings purify our samaya and recognise our primordial state.

I felt a stab in my heart as I read the news on Facebook. I was still hoping that this recent bout of ill health was only temporary.

Did some guruyoga, punctuted with grief.

Re: Are sun salutations a good substitute for Tibetan-style long prostrations?

Enough, this thread is about sun salutations. Aren't you the one who posted this fabulous video? I remember reading about Hindu pushups before and just found this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=22&v=F11t0fSEHEc I posted this video to speculate on the possible origins of suryanamaskara...

How well-known a figure is he? :stirthepot: I'm a 0 on the Kinsey scale and I've known about Tom of Finland since I was maybe 8 or 9 years old. My mom introduced me to it. She was a character. Today is her birthday, oddly enough. :offtopic: Why so defensive? Did you think I was calling you a homose...

Re: The Three Yanas, Ringu Rinpoche

This idea of checking out a teacher for 8 or 12 years is fine and dandy... but time is running out.. Do we really have the luxury of time...???? If you meet the wrong teacher you could spend kalpas in vajra hell, so 12 years is little compared to that. Of course this is just speaking in theory. In ...

Re: Art Engle talking about Bodhisattvabhumi

Anyway I haven't read the whole thing, only a bit as I had to return the book but I find it very interesting and rather more concrete and practical in many ways than the Bodhicaryavatara and other works influenced by it. Engle notes this in the lecture too. For example, the Bodhisattvabhumi says tha...

Found these pretty interesting, especially on Mahayana Abhidharma vs Hinayana Abhidharma.

Re: Are sun salutations a good substitute for Tibetan-style long prostrations?

Yes Thanks. What about that yoga history book which said that sun salutations are actually relatively modern and adapted from some exercise drills by some Maharaja IIRC? I guess the historical context isn't that important, but it's still a good, healthy movement? I remember reading about Hindu push...

Re: Are sun salutations a good substitute for Tibetan-style long prostrations?

I found more info about the Hindu prostrations. They are called Sashstanga danda pradakshina. This article about pilgrimages to Mount Kailash contrasts Tibetan practice of prostrations with Hindu non-practice in modern times: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/305045095_Pilgrimage_to_Mt_Kailas...
