Re: Shenphen Dawa Rinpoche on Reading Dzogchen Books

Sometimes I think the worst thing that happened in Tibetan religious history was gradual/sudden debate at Samye with the ensuing propaganda war by the Ba clan which was taken up later by Sarmapas. Malcolm, I'm not familiar with this history, and I would like to learn more about it. Could you sugges...

Re: Dzogchen & Vipashyana on thoughts

If you have specific issues about teaching, you should articulate these without attacking the person. Our demeanor expresses our realization, am I right or not? I did not "attack" Mr. Jackson in my comments. I expressed an opinion after examining some of his "teachings". And if I accept the premise...

Re: Dzogchen & Vipashyana on thoughts

He actually sent me a message the other day on Facebook to say that he has read my criticisms and doesn't appreciate it and wanted me to remove them, and apologize. And I told him that this is how I feel. This is a rather telling detail, IMO. Why couldn't he just refute your criticisms? If your cri...

Re: Dzogchen & Vipashyana on thoughts

Judging from a retreat with Jackson Peterson in Mexico, I did not hear anything contradictory to Dzogchen teachings. He also gave spontaneous Pointing Out instructions, which I thought were simple and affective. I have also read some of his posts in another Internet forum. A lot of what I have seen...

Re: Gyalwa Menri Wa, New Jersey, May 2016: Dzogchen

Thanks. If the subsequent teachings are in 2016, is there some expectation of one doing a lot of accumulation before parts two and three, or...? I had the same question and emailed my question to the director at Olmo Ling who asked Tempa Lama who said that "as long as you have received the prelimin...

Re: Gyalwa Menri Wa, New Jersey, May 2016: Dzogchen

I just had a good experience at Serenity Ridge in Virginia (they allow participants to camp it if they want, which is great--I slept in my truck). I'm curious how these teachings are divided up into segments. What does "part one" of the A-Khrid involve? how many parts are there? thanks It is probab...

Re: Gyalwa Menri Wa, New Jersey, May 2016: Dzogchen

Am I badly misinterpreting this? I'm trying to understand what needs are met by organizing this event in this way. As someone who is interested in the logistics of how to organize an event like this, I'm interested to know how well this serves the participants in the retreat. If you think this is e...

Re: Authenticity of a Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche Quote

I did a little poking around and the only thing I could come up with that seems somewhat related to the OP is the following: Sometimes people wonder if they really need a master. Generally speaking 99.9 percent of people need a master. There is a small chance that someone does not need a master. Mo...

Re: Authenticity of a Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche Quote

I've read in a few threads that supposedly Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche has said that only about 1% of disciples will recognize actual rigpa. Does anyone know if this is true, and if it is true, what is its source? It doesn't seem like something he would say. But if it is something he has said, I would ...

Re: Authenticity of a Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche Quote

I don't know what he said, but Milarepa said something along the same lines: of the millions of people alive only a fraction will know about Dharma, of those a fraction will practice it...achieve realizations... enlightenment. Do you know the source of that Milarepa quote? I remember reading someth...

Yes, which makes the alleged TWR quote highly suspect, IMO.

Re: The problem of nihilism

Karl Popper, a critical rationalist philosopher, developed the idea of falsifiability, the belief that in order for a hypothesis to be credible it first has to be disprovable, as an amendment to positivism, which is the belief that sensory experience form the exclusive source of all knowledge. Scien...

Re: a former student of aroter seeks help!

Welcome Inbetween. From what you've written, it sounds like you are a kind and sincere person who is currently experiencing some guilt and shame. The best purification for guilt and shame is getting to know your natural state and staying with that, and it doesn't sound like you were able to do that ...

Vimalakirti432, you may also benefit from watching Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Rinpoche's talk "Is there Buddhism without Rebirth?" that he gave at The UC Berkley Center for Buddhist Studies: I hope this helps. This is what he was critiquing. In fact, Dzongsar's rambling presentation was pretty weak....
