Re: Is the Portland Nichiren Shu temple closed?

Lesbian Jewish Buddhist Lady:* The point I was making is that the use of "slander" in this regard is a nonstandard usage in 21st Century Portland, Oregon, just as Mark is claiming that the arrangement of the altar at the Portland Buddhist temple is a non-standard arrangement. And none of this was th...

Re: Is the Portland Nichiren Shu temple closed?

I don't understand how it is blasphemous (note that I don't use the word "slander," which in standard English language usage actually pertains to the spoken word, not the arrangement of statues), to arrange an altar in a way that doesn't conform exactly to what the founder did over 700 years ago. Th...

Re: Is the Portland Nichiren Shu temple closed?

Similarly, I understand the history of Nichiren Buddhism and the Shoshu/SGI split, but it seems the grudge has become too central to the identity of some. And this leads to all the name-calling. Nichirenist; It's the karma of those who were heavily involved in NSA and thus it's their karma to work ...

Re: Is the Portland Nichiren Shu temple closed?

Yes, I forgot my password…. Anyway, I understand the history of where it comes from. But it reminds me of something a Polynesian man once said about his fellow Polynesians: "For some people, the grudge itself IS their identity." Some Polynesians (and I've met some who fit this bill) base their ident...

Re: Is the Portland Nichiren Shu temple closed?

I wasn't criticizing those who criticize. I wrote that people in the Nichiren Buddhist community have a tendency to accuse one another of committing slander -- and I find this tendency disgusting. It seems to me that the Nichiren Buddhist community is full of people running around pointing their fin...

Re: Is the Portland Nichiren Shu temple closed?

Oh, who am I kidding? Slender was committed all over the place in this temple. Obviously I meant to write that slander -- not "slender" -- was committed all over the place at this temple. Darned AutoCorrect. But I stand by my earlier comments: I think you're attributing far more interest in the mat...

Re: Is the Portland Nichiren Shu temple closed?

The Portland Temple was a slanderous place: http://markrogow.blogspot.com/2015/09/the-gohonzon-not-central-in-nichiren-shu.html I'd be curious to know where you got that picture. And I myself had wondered about Kishimojin being on the altar, as well as the Gohonzon not being central. There are actu...

Re: Is the Portland Nichiren Shu temple closed?

Well met, dharmapdx! I'm so glad to have crossed paths with someone who "gets it." Yeah, I remember the year that they put up that Chinese gate near W Burnside was about the time the city (under the influence of developers like Bill Naito) were noticing the already-underway decimation of the histor...

Re: Is the Portland Nichiren Shu temple closed?

Thank you. I actually grew up in the Black neighborhoods of Portland that you referred to. I graduated from Jefferson high school, the only high school in the state that is majority-Black. Perhaps the most gentrified and hipster-ish street in Northeast Portland these days is NE Alberta. When I lived...

Re: Is the Portland Nichiren Shu temple closed?

I think another way to put it may be this: it's kind of not a surprise that it may have closed because virtually no one needed it anymore.

Re: Is the Portland Nichiren Shu temple closed?

To clarify, roughly 2 to 3 years ago I was actually a regular at the temple. They even gave me a gohonzon. I really tried to make a go of it because I deeply appreciated the authenticity that it brought, the authentic connection to the Japanese American community of Portland, a sensei straight from ...

Re: Is the Portland Nichiren Shu temple closed?

I do think that she was the first female minister at this particular temple. She was a nice lady, and she did her best but for the most part she appeared to be overwhelmed by her job. And the "temple ladies" (the Buddhist version of "church ladies") made it very clear that they did not like having a...

Re: Is the Portland Nichiren Shu temple closed?

In the case of the Portland Temple, it was definitely the case that it was just a place for (aging) Japanese people to hang onto their culture. I think the congregation is numbered at less than 100 now, and some services were attended by as few as one or two people. Having noted this, I often attemp...

Is the Portland Nichiren Shu temple closed?

I'd occasionnaly drop into services. But I heard they lost their minister, and the calendar for October listed all services as cancelled, and they didn't even bother to post a November calendar. Anyone know what's going on? http://www.nichiren-shu-pdx.com
