Re: Can Nichiren Buddhists chant "Om mani padme hum" to the Gohonzon?

To be clear, your assumption is wrong as far as Nichiren teachings go. FWIW This is true. However, a distinction is made between the practice of calling on Avalokitesvara and the main teaching/practice of the sutra. In the East Asian Lotus traditions, the Lotus has two main messages - First, the Bu...

Re: Can Nichiren Buddhists chant "Om mani padme hum" to the Gohonzon?

Reciting the mantra can easily be considered to be based on the Lotus Sutra, as the Lotus Sutra explains the benefits of reciting Avalokiteshvara's name. Thank you. This is actually what I had assumed, which is why I asked the question. To be clear, your assumption is wrong as far as Nichiren teach...

Can Nichiren Buddhists chant "Om mani padme hum" to the Gohonzon?

I'm really not trying to be cute here. LOL. Given that this is a Tibetan chant, I would guess it doesn't have the tangled history with Nichiren Buddhism that, say, the Nembutsu does.

Sometimes I just think I'd like to chant that. I've always had an affinity for Tibetan Buddhism.

Re: Photographing the Gohonzon

Thanks for the interesting response. Ken Mandara from Instagram is the writer/publisher of the article you linked. Hard to say why N.Shoshu is so strict about photography since a couple photographs are already available online, one from the early 1900's, another by presumably illicit smartphone, pre...

Re: Photographing the Gohonzon

Is "Ken Mandara" from Instagram correct? Does the prohibition of photographing the Gohonzon actually stem from the desire to not have the Dai-Gohonzon exposed as a forgery?

Re: Long distance members? How does SGI connect?

In the old days, someone would make that trip to visit the person and help them set up a place to practice and teach them Gongyo. The person would be encouraged to make the effort to make the trip from Bethel to the nearest bestowal ceremony and it would be explained that their efforts to seek the ...

Re: Long distance members? How does SGI connect?

I’m shocked that there is a meditation class in Bethel, Alaska. 😳 Interesting response. Thank you. 🙏 Below is a picture of me as a child being held upside-down by a relative of my half-sisters in Alaska. Two of my half-sisters are registered Alaska native. I came very close to being raised in a very...

Long distance members? How does SGI connect?

Relatively random question, I know. But let’s say someone living in, say, Bethel, Alaska, wanted to be an SGI member. What would they do? Bethel is accessible only by air. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bethel,_Alaska I doubt there are any SGI study groups in Bethel, Alaska. I know the odds of someon...

Re: Why can't you buy a Gohonzon?

Very interesting. thank you. 🙏 I used to bestow Gohonzon, either framed or mounted, for example, http://markrogow.blogspot.com/2018/07/a-gohonzon-i-mounted.html . The following was my criteria for bestowing Gohonzon: Procedure for receiving and bestowing Gohonzon for traditionalists You must be chan...

Re: Surprises in Buddhism?

Sorry for being so frank and direct to you, I know, admire and even envy some aspects of your history and experiences around Buddhism and Buddhist cultures (Japanese). But many of your doubts justs shows how bad you should do a real effort to study Buddhism with some real deal serious teachers, ins...

Re: Surprises in Buddhism?

Before she returned to Japan, Rev. Myosho Obata actually told me she believes that I was Japanese in a previous life. I can assure you that I am aware of the history and structure of Nichiren Shu. And that was actually sort of the problem. Here I was a male in his 30s sitting next to elderly Japanes...

Re: Surprises in Buddhism?

Enclosed is a picture of me with Rev. Myosho Obata, third generation Nichiren Shu priest (from Japan) . She was often surprised by how much I knew about Buddhism. I have actually corresponded with Jacqueline Stone, professor of Japanese Buddhism at Princeton, and sometimes I even took some of her ar...

Uh-oh. I posted too soon: http://kruby.tripod.com/Gohonzonsource.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; (What I mean is, you CAN buy a Gohonzon in a shop … but in Japan. Kind of a sad display, actually.) Just to set the record straight. That Gohonzon shop is at the base of Mt. Minobu a...

Re: Surprises in Buddhism?

As the saying goes "Faith equals daily life", the results of the practice are to be seen here and now. The "prosperity cult" thing is a degenerate case, the win is the individual's human revolution; transformation from the inside out. Maybe another way to put it, is to repeat something Q once said:...

Re: Surprises in Buddhism?

The lion business in SGI is to suggest the practitioner adopt a fearless and strong attitude towards obstacles so as to overcome them; the lion fears nothing, and so on. As far as the youth division, I think the idea is to train courageous children to help them become courageous adults. I surely do...

“All life is dissatisfying.” Still, that sounds pretty pessimistic to me….
How about, “It is impossible to find lasting satisfaction in ordinary life”?

Probably a true statement, but I wouldn’t want to build an entire religious practice around that.

Re: Surprises in Buddhism?

OK, here’s a new surprise: all the references to lions. I recently found this article that says, “The Omamori Gohonzon and the Gohonzon enshrined in our home have the same powers of the Buddha and the Law. The Gohonzon is inscribed with the power of an attacking lion.” http://www.sginz.org/assets/do...
