Re: Is this a Nichiren Shu omamori?

Speaking of Nichiren Shu omamori…. Look at these great pictures from current eBay auction. https://www.ebay.com/itm/RARE-NICHIREN-SHU-OMAMORI-GOHONZON-TALISMAN-PENDANT-In-22K-GOLD-CHARACTERS/113025056878 Note: I am in no way affiliated with this auction and I’m not “advertising” it. Re: SGI retention rate only 3%?

Very interesting. Thank you. 🙏 I'm not a member of SGI and never have been, but I have been professionally interested in retention rates for the whole of my working life since I have taught optional courses in schools and community groups so I thought I could contribute here. Year-on-year retention ...

Re: SGI retention rate only 3%?

Thats a hard question to answer in detail since the local districts where people meet don't keep attendance lists. There are many people who don't subscribe to the publications so thats not a reliable measure either. Anecdotally, in my district over the last couple years perhaps a dozen newcomers h...

SGI retention rate only 3%?

I read on a Reddit forum that SGI retention rate is only 3%. Does anyone know if this is true or not? Thanks.

Re: Surprises in Buddhism?

That whole “pain is just an illusion” and “you don’t really exist” talk also goes on among students of “A Course in Miracles.” As I posted above, I was very close to Dr. Kenneth Wapnick, one of the most well-respected teachers of “a course in miracles.” He has many students all over the world. Commo...

Re: Surprises in Buddhism?

The implication that my difficulties in the university may have derived from the suspicion that I may have been a "shitty student" … No, that juxtaposition was inartful. "Shitty students" was meant as a general term, not meant to include you. My bad. Thanks, dude. Still love you, bro. LOL. One day ...

Re: Surprises in Buddhism?

Did you read any of your professor's papers or books - other than the ones that were assigned? Did you go to office hours to talk to them as people, see what makes them tick? Maybe they blew you off, but did you consider they were having a shitty day and their head of department is getting on their...

Re: Surprises in Buddhism?

With regard to my experience with academics and college professors, as I mentioned above it was Noam Chomsky (referred to by the New York Times as "arguably the most important living intellectual"), who encouraged me to attend college to begin with. Suffice it to say that my interaction with him was...

Re: Surprises in Buddhism?

You might consider looking at the Vinaya, or the code of conduct governing the Sangha. The only hierarchy is age. The strictest punishment possible, and only by consensus, is expulsion, enforced only by the silent treatment. Also, ideally, morality is a significant aspect of Buddhist education. Thi...

Re: Surprises in Buddhism?

Thanks for the responses, everyone. This has all given me a lot to think about…. With regard to the social hierarchy in Buddhist organizations, I suppose the deeper issue for me is I suppose I don't understand why Buddhist organizations are even necessary to begin with . Which kind of brings me to t...

Surprises in Buddhism?

Has anyone else been very surprised about certain things they have learned about Buddhism? Did you have preconceived ideas about Buddhism that were kind of shattered as your study progressed? Here are a few things that have surprised me about Buddhism, and they tend to not exactly be on the metaphys...

But I actually second-guessed myself, LOL, because as a general rule Q knows more than me. LOL. Beware - you never really know who's behind the keyboard. This is a pretty good portrait of QQ. https://cps-static.rovicorp.com/3/JPG_500/MI0001/984/MI0001984242.jpg?partner=allrovi.com My brother, this ...

Re: online Gohonzon

So, a good friend who lurks here told me that I posted the wrong image for the Shutei Gohonzon. This is the Shutei. No. 81 in the Gohonzon-shu. http://juhoukai.la.coocan.jp/mandara/gazou/081.gif Yep. That's the Gohonzon I was given at Nichiren Shu. I was actually going to offer a correction as well...

Re: What does the Nichiren Shoshu Gohonzon look like?

The Nichiren Mandala Workshop have a paper detailing their study of the NST Dai-Gohonzon https://nichirenmandala.weebly.com/uploads/4/4/4/0/44406171/specialissue_plankmandala.pdf it includes the usual early 1900's photo, and one apparently more recent by Saikakudoppo - that one is most interesting ...

Re: I want a Nittatsu gohonzon!

Beware spiritual materialism... Thanks, but I don't think my fondness for these Nittatau omamori stems from spiritual materialism on my part. (I mentioned the material value of them -- the fact that they are silver and listed for $2000 each -- merely as a side note.) But rather (1) a love of histor...

Re: I want a Nittatsu gohonzon!

That is remarkable. These are historical artifacts. I know! Stunningly beautiful, but unbelievably priced. Listing says that these are 100% silver, which obviously adds to the value. It's hard to believe that they went from silver omamori, to the current plastic version. https://en.wikipedia.org/wi...

Unreal. These Nittatsu omamoris are listed for nearly $2,000 each. They sure are gorgeous, though: https://www.ebay.com/itm/RARE-66th-HIGH ... 2980420127

Re: I want a Nittatsu gohonzon!

Looks like one of the big gohonzon one might see in a community center.. .needs a very large butsudan for the scales to complement. I started with NSA in the 80's and received a nikken gohonzon, the familiar all paper construction of traditional dimension. They were easy to get, showing up for meet...
