The Nyingma lama I practice with talks about it. It's even discussed in Zen in relation to the "hara."

Distance Learning

There is already a thread about "Buddhist Universities/Buddhist Studies" but how about places that offer distance learning? I've come across some things on the web, but not exactly what I'm looking for. Namdrol's Abhidharma class at Rime Shedrub Ling was nice, and he's continuing with other texts. B...

Re: Mind reading machine goes online

Yeah, but you can't use one to see what the guy next to you is thinking... This machine doesn't either. Having some background in machine learning and computer vision, I can make a couple guesses as to how this works. And, while it is impressive, it's nothing close to actually reading minds. Basica...

Re: Preliminary Practice of Prostrations of Purification

Yea, prostrations are my main practice right now. I'm also working towards 100,000. But it is to the Nyingma refuge tree, not the 35 purification and 7 medicine buddhas.

Re: Nyingma Refuge Tree

I just searched this subject in curiosity when I saw the image on the internet as I was reading up on some other questions on my mind. http://bodhicittasangha.org/images/stories/pages/refugetree.png Is this depicting Samantrabhadra, Vajrasattva and Nirmanakaya Buddha Shakyamuni on a branch sticking...

Wow, that generated a lot more responses than I anticipated! Thanks so much to everyone for the replies.

Just as a follow-up, my lama is totally fine with me receiving teachings from other teachers, including ChNNR. He also said that he is a very fine master or something along those lines. :)

Re: Dzogchen Community of Chogyal Namkhai Norbu

Does it make sense for one who is doing a ngondro with a face-to-face Nyingma lama to join the Dzogchen Community? My intuition tells me that much confusion might result, but I'd like to hear otherwise as I have felt a connection to ChNNR and his teachings. Thank you. Lots of people have different ...

Vajrayana as the vehicle of the laity

I'm currently reading Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Rinpoche's Longchen Nyingtik Practice Manual . It's actually really really awesome and I can't recommend it enough to anyone doing the Longchen Nyingthig Ngondro. I came across this quote: Looking back to the origin of the vajrayana, historically it wa...

Re: Question on meditation

how do I know which meditation is best for a beginner You don't know until you try. how will I know I am not a beginner any longer? That's a really loaded question, but I think one good metric is once you realize that everything is meditation and it doesn't only happen on the cushion. As those who ...

Re: Whose Buddhism is Truest?

don't theravadans hold a significantly different idea of buddha's omniscience than mahayanists? Yes. If I remember correctly, the main gist is that the Nikaya perspective holds that the Buddha was omniscient insofar as he was able to direct his consciousness to any object he pleased. He wasn't alwa...

Re: Hell in Tibetan Buddhism

Could a Bodhisattva be reborn in hell to alleviate the suffering of others? Well, from 8th bhumi on up (could even be lower, I'm not certain) they can choose their place of rebirth, so yes. There are stories of several Bodhisattvas whom wished to be reborn in lower realms to aid those there but the...

Re: devotion in refuge practice

That leads to the immediate follow-up question: should I even be doing the inner preliminaries if I don't have tremendous devotion for him yet? I mean, yea he has been guiding through the visualization and mechanics of the practice, but is there some sort of implicit agreement in Tibetan sanghas tha...

devotion in refuge practice

Hi, I have been practicing with a lama for a couple months, and I have a question that I would rather ask DharmaWheel about instead of him directly. He hasn't talked much about devotion to him, but just mentioned that I should read the chapter on How to Follow a Spiritual Friend in WOMPT (along with...

Re: Hell in Tibetan Buddhism

Could a Bodhisattva be reborn in hell to alleviate the suffering of others? According to Berzin, Serkong Rinpoche (one of Dalai Lama's senior tutors, now deceased) wished to do exactly this. But it is very difficult, and he failed to achieve it and was reborn as a human. (The deduction that he fail...
