Re: Retreats in tb

This thread also reminds me of this gem from Berzin's publishings of the late Serkong Rinpoche: Although full-time tantric meditation retreats continued over long periods are beneficial, most people do not have the luxury to undertake them. Therefore, Rinpoche felt it narrow-minded to think that we...

Re: Sutras on Sexual Misconduct

So far I have mostly read Patrul Rinpoche who seems to be quite strict on the orifices, places and times of the day, however I am quite interested where this idea came from and what the Buddha had to say about it. I have heard that Gampopa and Je Tsongkhapa were of the same style. Are there some Ti...

Re: Simhamukha Retreat @ Tara Mandala, May 19-27

They may be open to work-study arrangements if you’re willing to do a little work while you’re there. Most places are. Don’t forget, three meals a day are likely included in that fee.

Re: Oral Transmission

What are the prerequisites or conditions for oral transmission to occur? What is the difference between someone explaining Dzogchen to someone and a lama giving an oral transmission to a new student? Thank you. This is a bit confusing.. oral transmission usually refers to giving lung. As in the thr...

Re: Dharmic Fungibility

Well one trend in Western countries among westerners interested in Dharma is a generalized feeling that the teachings, advice, pujas, divinations, etc. should be offered for free. Sometimes this is due to a philosophical and/or ethical stance or posturing, leading to an expectation that Dharma cond...

Re: Sedona/Flagstaff

Yeah, get a vortex map.. and I don’t know if Sedona has anything like this: I remember in the ‘90s in Crestone CO at the Road Kill Cafe the waitress would give you an “aura buffing” for a little extra tip. If Sedona doesn’t have restaurants with these services, it should. Enjoy! Sometimes the New Ag...

Re: Finding a qualified Teacher

I've gotten into contact with many of the teachers and feel very hopeful and excited. Thanks for all the help, I'll tell you if Llama Wangdor has a shadow or not when I go and meet him myself  I’ve met Lama Wangdor Rinpoche when he’s visited New Jersey and attended a few different teac...

Actually it is very related to Dharma too. See this passage on the “vermillion powder” in Robert Beer’s handbook of TB symbols linked below: https://books.google.com/books?id=-3804Ud9-4IC&pg=PA24&lpg=PA24&dq=cinnabar+tibetan&source=bl&ots=FSEHUYIkFv&sig=ACfU3U1Qg3tEallRkmQb_EcqX12ZES65aQ&hl=en&sa=X&...

It’s extremely short: just 2 pages. More for personal use in a pinch .
It is for fulfilling samaya when you do not have time to do the medium or long version.
Yup. So very compassionate of Traktung Dudjom Lingpa, no?

Re: Chod Damaru vs standard Damaru

I did address this above already. Assuming you are talking about Dudjom Lingpa’s intermediate length Troma Tsok. This is still from the larger Chod terma cycle. And btw that lasts from 4-5 hours usually... depends who is leading and what length of mantra accumulation and breaks there are..the long ...

Re: Chod Damaru vs standard Damaru

I was under the impression that Throma practice is a chod practice. You are of course totally correct that Throma and chod are deeply entangled. You could even say (this is just my own interpretation, btw) that the Throma chod is a particular expression of the whole Throma thing, a leaf on the bran...

Also, I have two Chod drums. I’ll take them both to retreat in case one breaks or gets off tune. It’s never bad to have a spare... I'm so horrible with the bell and damaru  Separately I can keep a ok rhythm but soon as I try both... That’s totally normal for a beginner. If you just practice, p...

Also, since these ritual implements are actually also samaya substances,,,they are not meant to be shared really. Best to get a new one, not a used one. Get your new one blessed by a lineage master, (just like its important to have statues and paintings consecrated. The Lama activates the mantra in...

Re: Chod Damaru vs standard Damaru

I agree and have heard the same, however I was told directly by Drupon Lama Karma that a Chod Damaru was absolutely required for wrathful Chod. Hope this helps! What's wrathful Chod? The context of what I said previously was Dudjom Troma. He didn't go into specifics. I had asked him if damaru and k...

Re: Retreats in

Great responses so far. One thing I’ll add is that with the tremendous varieties of practices in the scope of Tibetan Buddhism there are various forms of retreat. So for example, there’s the Chod retreat where you visit 108 specific cemeteries, or 108 wrathful elemental places, etc. In this case the...
