Re: Offerings to the Buddha

Ah, I do miss the grand Shoshu altars. My favorite job was freshening the evergreens. Even to this day dusting and overhauling an altar is most satisfying.

Re: Reply to Ueno

dunno about this gosho...but i'm surprised you never heard of this before. that the gaki has been accused of translating in order to bolster their narrative. And how can you blame me for suspecting it.. not that i wished to go into it...but the lies that were created about the High Priest Nikken in...

Re: Reply to Ueno

AFAIK no one has ever cited a SGI translation materially different than other schools, please correct me. I read somewhere that some of sgi's translation are skewed..to meet with various reasonings for the True Buddha narrative. Sorry , i'm paranoid..but an open book and i try to be honest with mys...

That aside, I dont follow your reasoning. Nicherin seems to be talking about treasuring, honoring, practucing the Lotus Sutra, and so honoring the various buddhas. Could you explain further?

Re: Bullworker and isometrics.

Exercise in general has helped, I've not had difficulties with my back or legs in quite some time. That said, I do add other related exercises. Squats (15 reps using one leg, then again on the other) have notably helped when standing after kneeling/sitting. If a plank causes back/joint pain then I t...

I've not met her either- she's been on tricycle before too. Someday when I'm down in Houston maybe I'll get a chance to visit her temple. I really like her outreach methods, I know a couple SGI folks who go into prisons also. :namaste:

Re: Bullworker and isometrics.

A minute is a basic interval, each repeat of that is a rep. Reps until time to move on to something else. Facing up, I find a low couch or similar, rest my shoulders on it and hold the body up with heels. If its getting boring and a chair or ottoman or something is reasonably nearly, then put the he...

Re: What was Nichiren's issue with Zen?

Thats not the point. Could you imagine Nichiren ever discarding the Lotus Sutra because some experience madde it no longer relevant? Anathema.

Re: What was Nichiren's issue with Zen?

Going to nichirenlibrary and searching for "zen" is an interesting exercise. Nichiren certainly gives zen a lot of stick in general, for practices not being rooted in the sutras, or at least in his perspective not the proper ones.

Re: Questions on consistency and validity of mahayana sutra's

I found it was useful to begin reading them myself and if necessary, form opinions. It might be that going anywhere, continuity, discard vs grasp are the wrong questions to ask. Commentaries on sutras are also easily found, sometimes as prefaces to particular translations.

Re: can we talk about this/differing sect ideas in Nichiren Schools

Votary against votary is not a reasonable exercise so I seek to leave conclusion out and simply defuse the pre existing slights and start afresh without bias or division against any practitioner. I know this has not been the typical fashion of Nichiren dialog on the internet but I think we have an ...

Re: Nichiren Shoshu/SGI Pre-Split

Personally I think the Sho-Hondo was a money pit... beautiful but not realistic. I'd never judge anyone who was moved to contribute to it.. but there is no building that will suffice in the long run and it was ruinously expensive to build and maintain. The basis upon which it was torn down- it seems...

Re: Existence-Time

Is the idea that "to identify is to project"? Assume a piece of gravel, a human might observe approximations of color, texture, weight, boundary; projecting and finding those attributes. A flea presumably makes very different observations, projecting and finding other attributes. In what way does th...

Re: Nichiren Shoshu/SGI Pre-Split

I started with NSA mid 80's before the split, right before things started going undeniably sour. The organization was tremendously busy, holding conventions, new member campaigns, lots of youth activities. Although the organization was very close-knit as a consequence, there were costs as well; numb...

Re: Buddhism's class "problem"

If you go to pretty much any SGI center in the US you will find as diverse a crowd as its reasonably possible to obtain- though I suppose exceptions do occur. My local group is actually minority white, the non-white majority being made up of several different minorities (black, asian (sino/japanese ...

Re: "practice in daily life"

Perhaps, adopt the precepts as general instruction for conduct. Instead of squashing the bug, escort it outside. Have tea instead of a beer. Practice dana instead of thinking about it; find a volunteer cause and regularly donate some time. What would it look like to renounce isolation, renounce ange...

Still doubling down on practice and volunteering at the food pantries, otherwise staying home and only going out for groceries or a walk or a bike/motorcycle ride. We wear masks and distance outside the house and infrequently visit other family members- no large groups regardless. Work is sending me...

Re: personal meeting with Sensei Ikeda

I met Mr Williams in the old NSA days- he was in the community center for several days of meetings, my toban shift was on one of them. We had all spent a few days before sharpening the place up so things were on-point- he thanked us and looked pleased as he left so I think things had gone well. More...

Re: Bullworker and isometrics.

Long duration planks facing down, and also facing up. Facing up noticeably helps me maintain posture on the motorcycle which is much appreciated. Also pushups and leg raises. I'm not much into equipment but I do mess around with a pair of barbells. I had to give up flys with the 20lb+ barbells, tend...
