Buddha's Parinirvana

In the Mahayana Parinirvana Sutra, does the Buddha actually ever get around to entering into Parinirvana? Is it after getting food poisoning from off meat like in the Pāli recension?

Which chapter, if it's anywhere in there?

Re: The order the various versions of the Heart Sutra were written with and their authors

Well, authors, translators, or receivers. I think the Heart Sūtra with the "gate gate" was learned by the translator from a passing mendicant on his travels. Don't quote me. I need to find the source of that first.

Re: The role of truth in Buddhism?

Venerable Śramaṇakuṭṭāka was getting excited to expound his dharma for the betterment of sentient beings on DharmaWheel :toilet: . Oh well.

I think you aren't the only one who has been sarcastic in this thread. 82, 75, 3, 2, 1. All numbers anyways. I'll accept your apology and offer one of my own.

Re: The role of truth in Buddhism?

Oh, haha, you don't know how well I play along with games like the one you are playing now. now our Venerable Caoimhghín has 75 And based on your logic, that means I'm greater than venerables Zhiyi, Nichiren, Nāgārjuna, and the Buddha. Is it you who sings my laudations and acclaimations, not me. It ...

Re: The role of truth in Buddhism?

Threefold Truth has nothing to do with Indian model of two truths. It has its own meaning and intention; it shows Zhiyi's deeper understanding of the Dharma. What if I told you there was 75 truths? That would logically make me greater than either venerables Zhiyi or Nichiren. If you did and it enab...

Re: The role of truth in Buddhism?

you mentioned the word eternal. I can only assume why you attached it to my interpretation. Ah, I see. I just meant "eternal" by "eternal." I find it interesting this phenomenon of literal exactness, the typical demographic that experiences it and the perceived benefit. I believe I can produce many...

Re: The role of truth in Buddhism?

The simplest resolve is to contemplate the answer against the sutra they where born from (the lotus sutra) Believe it or not, but the three truths aren't in the Lotus Sūtra. Isn't that surprising? I don't think it mentions a "middle" in addition to a conventional and an ultimate anywhere in its tex...

Re: The role of truth in Buddhism?

how does the concept of Three Truths account for the concept of Pervasion, meaning that something cannot be singular and plural at the same time. The DL uses this principle to discuss the nature of the self; if the self is singular, then how can the aggregates be plural? either the self is all of t...

Re: Bhumi 10 or 11?

Study & ponder this section on the 10th Ground of the Ten Grounds Sutra . Skip down to the Summarizing Stanzas, if you wish. There is a stage or ground beyond the 10th called the Tathagata Ground. I guess this answers the question. In countless kalpas, I can describe only a small part of the wisdom...

Bhumi 10 or 11?

Some people place complete awakening at bhumi 10, and some place that awakening beyond it, on a rhetorical bhumi 11.

Anyone know more about this?

Re: The role of truth in Buddhism?

Chinese characters don't follow the same sort of etymological conventions you find in other languages. I noticed it was a bizarre simplification. It's odd, because 台 is used all over the Taishō reactions of the texts, predating this simplification. I wonder if the Taishō editors were already using ...

Re: The role of truth in Buddhism?

If the two truths could be stripped from the ten realms Nichiren would have done so for the same of making liberation more efficient. What did you mean here? If the two truth teaching was the most appropriate according to nichiren he would have simply employed it. he did not. But he did, one can sa...

"Realms" is perfectly fine if it's understood with a wider range of meaning. As for "worlds," I don't know if I would call them that in English, but I'm the opposite of omniscient. Preferences, preferences...

Re: The role of truth in Buddhism?

天台 Its a simplified version. The nuance is different. 天臺 It has an active, experiential sense, rather than being a place. The focus is not the location or nature of the place, but rather the activity that takes place there. Where do you get the "active, experiential sense" reading from? I just look...

How many Dharma realms accompany the 2 truth teachings and how many dharma realms in the 3 truth teachings? Three thousand for both, if you believe in the ten suchnesses, the ten destinies, the ten destinies further within each of the ten destinies, and the three realms. 10x10x10x3. But why does it...

Re: A Manifesto Against the Enemies of Modernity

Like the Buddhadharma, one wonders? Who knows. As religions go it does seem to be pretty miserable. From the least happy sutta in the dispensation to the śrāvaka: Thus I heard: At one time the Gracious One was dwelling near Anupiyā, in the Mango Wood. Then at that time venerable Bhaddiya, Kāḷigodhā...

Re: Was Dogen really a realist?

I'm asking about a specific book's claim, not a generalization on defining terms. The author surely has their definitions already chosen so defining it here may not be relevant. It says "mystical" realism, so Venerable Dōgen's realism can be whatever the author wants it to be IMO. That's just my gu...
