Re: Basis for vipaka being individual

Hi there, Though there is some variation between schools, it is typically taught that the consequences/vipaka of karma ripen on the individual that generated that karma alone. What I do not really understand is that, as far as I know, it is the volition aggregate that generates karma, but other agg...

Re: Are Zen teachers awakened?

A Buddha would ‘receive’ any sentient being with no differentiation. Lastlegend, Because Buddha does not cling to great or small, women or man, such or such... whatever classification or form. Buddha perceives Buddha. Wisdom plays without obstructions, automatically helping all dreams to awaken, ou...

Re: How awakened are bodhisattva stream-entrants?

How does the śrāvaka stream-entrant differ in his realization from the bodhisattva stream-entrant other than the former theoretically missing the foundations of bodhicitta? investigating their practice the most salient difference is that one following mahayana doctrine will inevitably cultivate sel...

Re: Are Zen teachers awakened?

Yes, Astus rejects utterly the notion of transmission, he always has. He thinks Dharma can be learned from books. Dharma transmission in Zen is not about one person teaching another, but one person authorising another after that other has already mastered everything that had to be mastered. "everyt...

Re: How awakened are bodhisattva stream-entrants?

Something which came to mind, if the stream-entrant is truly so awakened, then why don't the uncommon methods lead to the first ground instead of the Tathagata ground? There is no guarantee that even the first ground will be reached in the so-called "common" methods, so a method offering the first ...

Maybe try making a personal vow to address your weakness?

Re: Are Zen teachers awakened?

A student is capable of attaining his or her own state of experience and realization, irrelevant of the teacher's, because it is the student who does the work, the heavy lifting, not the teacher. The teacher's required skillful means are just a guardrail, the rest is up to the student. Each student...

Likewise, if you have a NianFoJi 念佛機, the little electronic device that plays a recording of Amitabha’s name being chanted, when the batteries die, they go to the Pure Land. :jumping: My Greek lama had an Amitabha statue that endlessly chanted "Namo Amitabha" in a high pitched electronic tinny Chin...

Re: Are Zen teachers awakened?

The problem I had with Western Zen teachers is that they were often frankly unaware of states of mind and how to navigate them. My last year or so with Zen I sat in dull or trance-like states . My teachers were unable to provide any guidance. When I had meditation problems, they were not familiar w...

Re: Are Zen teachers awakened?

Emotional or intellectual, both can give problems. Like in the Himalayas ( perhaps not in Japan) empowerments are very important, the teaching not always. In the West even the empowerment becomes a thing to talk-know intellectually about. People always have to show their best, to prove. No wonder m...

Re: Are Zen teachers awakened?

Matylda, Criticism is nicely spoken. However, what makes a Buddha a Buddha is he doesn’t see any being any difference. I think that’s what meant by my teacher ‘wisdom of Buddha’ (just Buddha in Asian language no plural). A Buddha would ‘receive’ any sentient being with no differentiation. This I thi...

Re: Are Zen teachers awakened?

Is it that length of time really determines awakening? Or this this what people seek for in a lineage? Because for example, one can see this is easy and just wants to have fun like myself, but that can easily take many more lifetimes. A very tiny overlook.

Re: Are Zen teachers awakened?

A transcended teacher is difficult to find. In my opinion (Bruce Lee‘s tone), anyone can describe nature, and judging from the their written material or language use too often they haven’t hit the final destination because a state of no delusional thoughts with clear awareness isn’t final. I was tol...
