Re: Korinji - Residential practice (or visit)

Korinji update. Since the last post in December, we've completed the house. We're now a month into the first ango with five residents. Still winter here, with 6" of snow on the ground. Here are a few shots from a week or two ago. House, looking uphill from the zendo (landscaping to be completed when...

Re: Zazen and breathing

Scholars have their motivations of course. But other people seem largely motivated by their own affinities/aversions. For example, people who study Zen for some years but never learned or heard about such practices are hesitant to admit that perhaps their lineages lost something , or didn't preserve...

Re: Zazen and breathing

I am not surprised if Tendai-shu preserves some practices not dissimilar to those preserved in Zen lines. But to say the Zen practices involving cultivation centered on the tanden come from Japanese Tendai is to ignore evidence of their existence among the Song Chinese Chan teachers and monks that c...

Re: The Rinzai Zen Way: A Guide to Practice

Thanks, Pero. Glad you found it worthwhile. I will probably write something in the future containing more extensive breathing/internal cultivation information. My motivation for doing so would not be instructional, but just to reveal some of the wealth of the tradition that, for a few reasons, remai...

There is no difference between soto and rinzai tradition originally.. one cannot experience different satori. and instructions are in fact exactly same. What differs is only teacher his realization and experience. The teacher not lineage is the main point.

Re: Zazen and breathing

There is some basic instruction in the book for "belly breathing" (fukushiki kokyu), which is something necessary to practice zazen (it's not "Zen" breathing per se, just normal human breathing, but many people lose the habit of breathing this way). As Matylda said, tanden soku or kokyu is different...

Re: Dog thread

Interesting mix. We had a Border Collie and he was a handful and a half! Never had a Lab but they seem very mellow. It is interesting. Seems to combine the best of both breeds: intelligence and energy of the collie, though dialed down a few clicks (and no herding behaviors). Affectionate, bonded na...

I noticed that. I'm partial to black dogs...

This one is half-Lab, half-Border Collie.

Re: Traces of scholasticism in (Zen) Buddhism

Nice replies in this topic. To add to suggestions RE a companion text for basic (minimal) conceptual foundation, assuming one is practicing with guidance from a qualified teacher: a nice short text that might be sufficient for this is Torei's Spur for a Good Horse (Legget's translation, found in his...

Re: "One Mind" in Hua Yen thought

There was at one time a now defunct Zen forum. I dipped into it a couple of times and a large proportion of its western members seemed to have swallowed the 'vedantic one mind' interpretation hook, line and sinker. I suspect that was why a number of them failed to see that well known traditional Ve...

Dog show and tell. Love it.

Behold, the oxytocin-addled eyes of the (soon-to-be) Korinji watchdog.

Re: Pure Land teachings from a Zen perspective

While I do not have a formal Zen teacher and I have not undertaken Zen training, I try to follow the advice of Master Hakuin for lay people, to recite the Nembutsu for realizing Amida as our true nature, as exemplified in this story: Reflections on “The Old Woman’s Enlightenment” https://www.lionsr...

Re: Pure Land teachings from a Zen perspective

What I meant is that, if I were to believe that the Pure Land is a literal place billions of galaxies away, with lotus flowers the size of carriage wheels, clear ponds, jeweled trees, etc., then it might cause me to have a sense of anxiety over whether or not that belief is true and real. I would r...

Re: Pure Land teachings from a Zen perspective

Here's the full bit from Inexhaustible Lamp : Torei discussing vehicles and "schools," complete with a bit of Zen (or at least, Ekayana As Understood By Zen) triumphalism. But yes, one of my favorites. I take it as an apt scolding, and it does tend to shut me up. Nowadays there is much talk about th...

Re: Pure Land teachings from a Zen perspective

Insisting that Amida either exists or does not exist, when seen in light of the Lankavatara Sutra, is an unnecessary dualistic distinction. The One Mind in all things just is, no matter what name or form we ascribe to it. The part in bold is an unnecessary dualistic distinction. I would rather seek...

FWIW, I always thought that coining the term "Pretend-ai" was a stroke of genius.

Re: Koryu Shugendo

One assumes that the Tendai and Shugendo training detailed starting on pg. 58 of that article was considered sufficient to revive the specific rituals recorded in the family materials. In regard to Shinto elements, I have no idea if "transmission" is viewed in the manner to which we are accustomed i...

Re: Koryu Shugendo

Gaynor Sekimori did some research on the post-war rebirth/revival of various Shugendo traditions that I have found interesting. Among others it has examined the one in question, which apparently was a family tradition able to preserve an archive of ritual manuals and other documents: For example: ht...
