Re: Pure Land Teachings of Master Chu-Hung

Thank you, these are wonderful. Among the many moments that spoke to me: Mind is basically unborn: it is born when causal conditions come together. Mind basically does not die: it dies when causal conditions disperse. There seems to be birth and death, but fundamentally there is no going or coming. ...

Re: Six New Sutra Translations by 84000

I never knew people thought they were different until you asked me on Reddit. They both stand next to Amitabha, with Avalokiteshvara on the other side. Here I thought I could sneak in here without recognition. Haha. Anyway, part of it is that I'd never seen any depiction that had Vajrapani labeled ...

Re: Different Pure Lands

https://digest.bps.org.uk/2015/09/09/mental-effort-is-contagious/ <-- this is a study I point to every now and then because I think it supports the idea of a Buddha-land, at least insofar as the concept that a Buddha being present must inherently have some palpable effect on the environment in whic...

Re: Six New Sutra Translations by 84000

Thank you, OP, for sharing these sutras. I've managed to read through all of them now except for the first. Some comments: The Questions of Maitreya on the Eight Qualities I really enjoy how, aside from the context of cultivating bodhicitta, the content of this teaching could've easily come straight...

Re: When did you switch from "I should practice" to "I want to practice?"

The first time my sister tried to kill herself, my PTSD (from her trying to kill me twice when I was a child--she's bipolar) was kicked into full swing and I was pretty unstable. Going to the hospital was the catalyst. I'd been reading scripture quite a bit up until that point, but here I was, 22, m...

Re: Difference in attainments

Buddhahood is a supramundane jñana. And what does that actually mean? A buddha is without thoughts, lacks the functions of the five aggregates, all activities are automatic, and the effect on beings is solely dependent on the deluded perception defined by their karma. From the perspective of beings...

Re: Buddha in God realm?

Are you thinking of Maitreya Bodhisattva teaching the devas currently in the Tusita Heaven? Since we just as often call him Maitreya Buddha, I feel like that's the most likely candidate.

Re: Six New Sutra Translations by 84000

How should one read Mahayana sutras? Is there some framework, some order, or does one just pick up whatever's available? Approach is going to vary considerably by tradition, and likely even by whomever your teacher is. Having a teacher to guide in one's dharmic studies is invaluable, particularly a...

Re: Where are the bodhisattvas?

Our reality is manifest of mind. Prayer, calling upon the bodhisattvas for their aid, results in reality manifesting through the media of mind. Thus, we certainly receive their protection, when faith and practice are put together. When we can directly perceive the emptiness of reality as it is exper...
