Re: Caste system and Hinduism

Sigh... What does that mean? Ofcourse caste system has everything to do with povery. Imagine having a social system where not individuals but whole families are stuck on the lowest social level for not hundreds but thousands of years. Those people don't have any means and often not even the mentali...

You yourself are saying it has to do with poverty and then relate that wholeheartedly to caste system.
Sigh...
What does that mean?

Re: Caste system and Hinduism

Damn right it isn't! You know how many people die of poverty related causes (malnutrition, infant mortality, lack of access to clean water and sanitation, lack of access to health care, etc...) in India? For example: 10% of deaths in India are caused by digestive and diahorreal diseases, compare th...

Re: Caste system and Hinduism

Do you as a Buddhist have no problem and as an aspiring bodhisattva have no concern or responsibility that in your backyard they are brainwashing children with ideas of caste system and allowing domination of people and violence? (note: this violence is not equal to violence like London bridge)

Caste system and Hinduism

Did buddha teach caste system? Did buddha teach that lower caste people be oppressed? If there is an ideology that teaches that if this ideology is actively taught in pathsalas which is what was done in Hindu system do we as Buddhists believe this has nothing to do with belief system and everything ...

Re: Sam Harris receives a (literal) pointing out instruction

I think I do understand that much, but how are these functions not "in the aggregates?" Admittedly I wouldn't be sure "where" to put them, perhaps "in" sankhara and sanna, but I dunno What I said was that knowledge and ignorance are not where listed as mental factors, etc. This is why they are not ...

Re: Sam Harris receives a (literal) pointing out instruction

Of course it did. No great Zen master can introduce you to Dzogchen teachings. This part of buddha dharma is terribly confusing to me. If the final realization of all the mahayana is same buddha hood and same stages of bhumis, why wouldnt a Zen teacher be able to introduce you to Dzogchen or simila...

As someone else asked cognition would be samjna skandha so then vidya falls within pancha skandha? There must be a logic around this.

Re: Sam Harris receives a (literal) pointing out instruction

Very helpful discussion going on here. @michaelb Given that even the popular non Buddhist teachings use the word awareness and they many times mean that this awareness is some form of high level undertaking and that many people confide this awareness as rigpa for the sake of clarity we use some anot...

Re: Sam Harris receives a (literal) pointing out instruction

Malcolm, perhaps it would help if you defined the word technically. As far as I understand awareness is the vijanana skandha. Is that what you are referring to? So rather than disputing the word awareness which as you can see someone even uses it to say they are not aware when they do certain things...

Re: Sam Harris receives a (literal) pointing out instruction

Many people in spiritual market use the word awareness. Some say choice less awareness some say observerawareness. In my understandjng all this problem we are discussing here boils down to inappropriateness for teachers in public to unequivocally state that only Buddha's realization is true bodhi an...

Re: Sam Harris receives a (literal) pointing out instruction

Glad to hear translators are being strict about technical terms and even using standard Sanskrit words or Tibetan ones. Perhaps we should also start saying buddha dharma instead of buddhism. When we talk physics or mathematics do we use loose terms. Nope. For some reason we think we understand dhar...

Re: Mundane right view

Thanka guys. Yes given all the sutras I think it is rather silly and very biased to try to treat gods like they are just psychological. And I agree it's the word people are afraid of or confused because of dominance of Abraham in religions. Before them everyone worshipped gods all over. Even in Abra...

Mundane right view

Hi guys can anyone help me find the sutra where buddha talks about mundane right view. I have been taught that the mundane right view directly mentions existence of realms. That would imply existence of other beings. I wanted to see where buddha describes gods as sentient beings. May be there are ot...

Re: How old were you when you first became interested in Buddhism?

Not born a Buddhist but extremely interested at age 7. No option in the Poll for this, friends. Buddha becomes The Figure at this age. We read four noble truths and Buddha's lifestory in school then and I want to conquer desire and be liberated from samsara.
