Re: Women in Pure Land

Of course, no one yet has explained to me why Kannon sama has a woman's body. It's amazing how for thousands of years, monks have been and still tell women that they need a man's body to be born in the Pure Land, but let a woman say she's keeping hers. The arguing! To me as a woman, it's proof of a ...

Re: Women in Pure Land

Jikan, a discussion of Pure Land as understood by esoteric schools or, Shingon, Tendai, Ch'an is no problem. I'm familiar with Kakuban's Amida Hishaku. Just don't turn it into a Tantra vs. Pure Land , which is the better philosophy debate. That's all. As to my keeping a woman's body, why not? Why wo...

Re: Women in Pure Land

If some people wish to argue Tantra, please go to that forum and discuss it all you wish. I have no interest in Tantra teachings. I follow the Pure Land teachings and this is a Pure Land forum. I follow Honen who indeed said we could go to the Pure Land with our afflictions! And Shinran agrees with ...

Re: Attending First Nishi Hongwanji Service: What to expect?

Okay from my experience: Shinshu: no real Pure Land,, this world is the Pure Land, Amida is a metaphor for total compassion. No praying to other deities or other practices. Amida already accomplished his vow so there is no need to pray for anything or others, shows a lack of faith. Chanting Nembutsu...

Re: Women in Pure Land

Hi Nosta; as a feminist & lesbian I understand your issues with misogyny. What you need to understand is the status of women in India at the time of the Buddha, it was truly horrible. These two links below will put the Buddha's behavior in it's proper context; he lived an died approx: 563 B.C.E - 48...

Re: Attending First Nishi Hongwanji Service: What to expect?

Hi Kendali; heh, I'm reform too. And not to worry, Jodo Shinshu churches are uber friendly and helpful. As said, expect pews, a service book, in the Shinshu Church I attended in 1998 in NYC we'd line up to offer incense, usually make a cash offering as well (totally optional) I was worried too about...

Re: Is Pure Land "Buddhism" contradictory to Buddhism?

Oops I posted in the wrong thread. Anyway, Pure Land is older than either Tibetan or Ch'an schools. The Pure Land sutras are some of the oldest in the Mahayana canon.

Re: Women in Pure Land

Okay, I looked through my books & can clear this up: in Japanese Buddhism: 'Original Enlightenment' hongaku theory: we are inherently enlightened became the leading thought and quite normative for Japanese sects except for the Jodo sects. . Read Jacqueline Stone's "Original Enlightenment and the Tra...

Re: Different Amitabha mantras and their differences

Himalayanspirit; you'd have to ask a Tibetan buddhist about the purpose of their mantra. Rebirth mantras exist in Chinese and Japanese buddhism too in Tendai & other sects. As a Jodo buddhist we call on Amitabha's name as it says to do so in the Pure Land Sutras. Using Sanskrit Namo Amitabhaya is pe...

Re: Women in Pure Land

MP; that's exactly how that passage of the dragon king's daughter's 'male' transformation is interpreted; as foolish. A rebuke to those who think that way. I've never heard it expounded by any priest other than this way. The Buddha's aunt Prajapati became enlightened in her female body & countless w...

Re: Women in Pure Land

in the Lotus Sutra, the dragon king's daughter attains buddhahood in her female form. If you read some of the later sutras, namely the Blood Pool Sutra, wherein women go to a special hell just for having menses, you see how the desire to escape the female form became ingrained with the misogyny. gas...

Re: Women in Pure Land

For scholarly discussions: Bernard Faure's "The Red Thread" is excellent, what we read in my seminar. For reality just look at how Shinran dynamically viewed his sexuality and women: he saw his wife as Kannon. I think personally that says it all. the scapegoating of women in Buddhism (to this woman)...

Gassho Astus; thanks for those nice words. I love having these discussions. I remember very well from e-sangha that there was never rancor on the Pure Land boards only sharing, learning, all very stimulating. But now I need help as I'm confused. I think that's a splendid idea about a webcam!and I'm going to suggest it to our main temple in LA, along with a yearly retreat. I know a Jodo priest in Australia is talking about meeting his far flung members via webcam.

Re: Is Pure Land beyond Samsara?

Let's remember that Pure Land Buddhism is older than Ch'an and Vajrayana schools. It originated in Afghanistan, yes the West! Amitabha has blue eyes & I think it's important to realize that Buddhism isn't just 'Asian' but cross-cultural and always has been from the earliest times. The Western Pure L...

Aha, Acala is Fudo Myo in Japan, he's very popular, he has tons of temples and is included in so many. I worshipped him in the past, he's the patron of hard dharma practice.

Re: Why does chanting Amituofo calm the mind?

Whatever works, whichever buddha you have a karmic connnection with, is the best one for you. For most ordinary people, like me, Amitabha and Guan Yin are the buddhas we have the closest connections to & why there is so much literature about them helping people. I tried chanting Medicine Buddha's ma...

Many do Fragrant herbs, but how many succeed? That's why I vow to be born in Amitabha's Western Pure Land.
Last Legend, is Medicine Buddha's Lapiz Lazuli Pure Land non-retrogressive? I know Tushita heaven isn't, which is a big consideration. I don't want to return to this Saha world!
