Re: Tendai for the sole practitioner

I think that's a splendid idea about a webcam!and I'm going to suggest it to our main temple in LA, along with a yearly retreat. I know a Jodo priest in Australia is talking about meeting his far flung members via webcam.

Re: Is Pure Land beyond Samsara?

Let's remember that Pure Land Buddhism is older than Ch'an and Vajrayana schools. It originated in Afghanistan, yes the West! Amitabha has blue eyes & I think it's important to realize that Buddhism isn't just 'Asian' but cross-cultural and always has been from the earliest times. The Western Pure L...

Aha, Acala is Fudo Myo in Japan, he's very popular, he has tons of temples and is included in so many. I worshipped him in the past, he's the patron of hard dharma practice.

Re: Why does chanting Amituofo calm the mind?

Whatever works, whichever buddha you have a karmic connnection with, is the best one for you. For most ordinary people, like me, Amitabha and Guan Yin are the buddhas we have the closest connections to & why there is so much literature about them helping people. I tried chanting Medicine Buddha's ma...

Re: which pure land do you seek?

Many do Fragrant herbs, but how many succeed? That's why I vow to be born in Amitabha's Western Pure Land.
Last Legend, is Medicine Buddha's Lapiz Lazuli Pure Land non-retrogressive? I know Tushita heaven isn't, which is a big consideration. I don't want to return to this Saha world!

Re: Faith and Letting Go

Interesting discussion; I'm a pure land follower via Honen so we believe you have to make the effort, Amida's vow is there but we have to practice saying a lot of nenbutsu and try not to commit evil acts. Honen told the prostitute, if she could - to leave her evil profession, but if she couldn't to ...

Re: Community in Western Buddhism

Very true Huseng, some place can be ethnic centers . But at the same time if the dharma is preached by knowledgable people & Buddhist culture is there we all can benefit. I sure have. Last Legend, I don't live far from D.C. maybe we will meet & you can see a real non-Asian buddhist;-) Mike I don't k...

Re: Community in Western Buddhism

Hmm, I think this thread should be titled non-Asian Western Buddhism, as at least in the U.S. we have 3rd generational Buddhist temples from 19th century Asian immigrants that have great sanghas that also reflect American culture. I've attended a Jodo Shinshu church, belong now to a Jodo Shu online ...

Re: Pure Land Death Stories

Gassho Venerable; it's wonderful to see you here :namaste: I can tell you there are Jodo pure land death stories, I asked for them over at our group & Stephen & Shinri (priests) were so helpful in posting. These come from the past & there were collections,Ojoden, which as mentioned aren't translated...

Re: No Proofs of Sucessful Rebirths?&Are Pure Land sutras real?

Namdrol, yes absolutely there are other pure lands, is Medicine Buddha's Lapis Lazuli Pure Land non-retrogressive like Amida Buddha's? I know Tushita Heaven isn't, which is why I don't pray to be born there, (as if that would happen;-) About other evidences, first let me say I'd practiced since 1996...

Re: No Proofs of Sucessful Rebirths?&Are Pure Land sutras real?

Gassho Contra and everyone; I'm glad you are well & yes, this happened to me in 2003 & I'm fine, perfect. Let me tell you what my Jodo monk (also euro-american) told me when I was starting out. I had said to him: "I'd like to believe in Amida and the Western Pure Land but I don't." He replied; "You ...

Yup, Kannon-sama never fails; this is my favorite dharma gate for sure.
I recognize more names here from E-sangha. This is super.

24 hour Streaming Nembutsu May 21 Tokyo time

Kanchi-in of Zojo-ji in Tokyo is holding it's annual 24 hour Nembutsu recitation. This year especially there will be chanting for those who died in the disaster. It starts Tokyo time 1pm Saturday May 21. "We will hold the 24 hours Nembutsu retreat coming May 21(Sat.)1pm - 22(Sun.) 1pm this year. We ...

Nostra; Maybe some here will remember me from E-sangha, I'm a modern euro-american pure lander & forgive me if this story is a repetition to you but I hope it will inspire others with faith. I'm a pure land devotee since 1996, originally from New York City with lots of temples and a wonderful Jodo m...
