Receiving both Buddhist & Bön Dzogchen teachings?

Is it possible to receive both Buddhist & Bön Dzogchen teachings without any major difficulties arising? My primary concern is the implications for my practice; secondarily, I am unsure of the proper etiquette and social implications around this. My sense so far is that, at the level of Dzogchen, th...

Re: Dzogchen Community of Chogyal Namkhai Norbu

Thanks Spelare! I have completed about half of FPMT's Discovering Buddhism (I think that is their lamrim program) and it looks like some overlap. That said, I would like to look into this for sure. I appreciate the info! Then it sounds like you definitely have a good basis to get started! You may b...

Re: Dzogchen Community of Chogyal Namkhai Norbu

Ditto, now that I understand what SMS is I am interested in looking into these courses. If anyone can direct me to a first step in this direction then I would appreciate it! I would say there's no harm whatsoever in getting a head start on the SMS curriculum. If you consider the actual contents of ...

Re: Dzogchen Community of Chogyal Namkhai Norbu

Not sure if this is too in detail a question for a public forum(please let me know if so, I will edit it out), but when Rinpoche says visualizing the Trondu alone is enough when on a Tara retreat, does this include the seed syllable at the heart-center and/or the mantra rotating around it? I am not...

Re: What Shamatha tradition best prepares one for Dzogchen?

If the OP is still interested in cultivating śamatha prior to connecting with a guru, this book by Tony Duff looks pretty good. His premise is to teach śamatha-vipaśyanā in a way that aligns well with the approach of Mahāmudrā and Dzogchen, yet which does not reveal any of the inner aspects that req...

Re: Buddhism school

I think a lot of practitioners who lack confidence in any of those sort of metaphysical claims just go ahead and receive teachings from traditions that do maintain them. And the practitioners either ignore them, interpret them psychologically, or eventually encounter what they consider to be proof t...

Re: What Shamatha tradition best prepares one for Dzogchen?

Ya. That’s my understanding of his position too. Not sure how you get to don’t do shamatha from that. I think the point he's making is that it doesn't make sense to do śamatha alone if we aspire to liberation. Now, Wallace does sometimes teach śamatha-only retreats, but his intent is to offer somet...

Re: What Shamatha tradition best prepares one for Dzogchen?

Tulku Urgyen used to say, I been told, that people that developed a strong shamatha practice where the most difficult person to give direct introduction. People like Allan Wallace is putting an unnecessary distance between the student and the natural state in my opinion based on what I been told by...

Re: What Shamatha tradition best prepares one for Dzogchen?

Magnus has a point, though: why wait to meet a master? Attuning with a qualified teacher makes meditative stability easier to realize. There's no harm in being introduced before having much cultivated śamatha, then receiving pointing-out instructions periodically interspersed with practice. There ar...

It looks like the price on Amazon has dropped down to $100 again, so those of us who paid $120 for the preorder should get the difference refunded. Nice.

Also, looking forward to the book launch today!

Re: Dzogchen Community of Chogyal Namkhai Norbu

That framing is rather general, and I'm still interested in the broader question, but let me give a more specific context: Why do we use a bell when we do the guruyoga of Padmasambhava, but not when we do the guruyoga of Garab Dorje? We can do the guruyoga of Padmasambhava without a bell, e.g. if we...

Re: Dzogchen Community of Chogyal Namkhai Norbu

There are some practices in which we use a vajra bell or other instruments, and other practices in which we do not use such instruments. What is the principle that determines whether or not it could be appropriate to integrate instruments in a given practice?

Re: How to Liberate Others Without Them Knowing

If you are so fortunate as to receive mendrup pills for liberation upon tasting (myong grol), you could always slip them into the food or drink of unsuspecting beings . . . let us know how that one works out for you. Probably better to ask before dosing anyone, unless you're comfortable navigating p...

Re: Machig Labdron Wisdom from an Old Lady

This is wonderful! It seems to be a condensed version of Machig's Last Instructions. As it happens, I was just reading that text earlier today in the Jérôme Edou book Machig Labdrön and the Foundations of Chöd . Here is Lama Tsultrim Allione reading a few selections from Edou's translation as an aid...

Re: Dzogchen Community of Chogyal Namkhai Norbu

In the Sodogpa Lodro Gyaltsen book, Rinpoche refers to "the invocation by the master Longchenpa from the old Long Thun: NAMKHAI NASSU etc." Can anyone direct me to an english translation and transliteration of the Tibetan for Longchenpa's refuge prayer referenced above? I haven't been able to find i...

Re: Dzogchen Community of Chogyal Namkhai Norbu

It seems that sometimes chöd can be performed for non-practitioners in order to benefit them. Is there a protocol for doing this with the chöd practice Rinpoche has taught us, or is the understanding that we should only do it in the presence of those who have received transmission? I am partially as...

I am glad this is available online, especially since Rinpoche was not able to come to North America this year. This is the next best thing to being on retreat with him.

I don't know why you're suggesting I think my perspective is more important than anyone else's. This is a topical post about someone else's newly-published article linked to a booklength treatment of the topic recently put out by an academic press. I found the article interesting and wanted to bring...

Sex, for example. What I am highlighting here is a more extensive and scholarly treat...

Additionally, here is a review of Barstow's book by Holly Gayley of the University of Colorado Boulder: https://tricycle.org/trikedaily/vegetarian-tibetan-buddhism/ As she notes, the practical implementation of vegetarianism in Tibet varied according to the particular health and samaya concerns of t...
