Only if you believe merit accumulates in the mala with use. In any case it's the fancy stone malas that get the most use by quite a stretch, in my case.

Re: Solving the hard problem.
ii) what is the relation between mind and body? Do they interact? Are all activities of sentient beings explainable in purely physical terms? I would call this problem 'the mind-body relation problem'. I put it to you that they do interact. If they did not, we would all be completely paralyzed.

Re: Question for those who carry a mala in daily life
I have a number of malas, two nice ones and some very inexpensive ones. If I am going to carry one around with me, I take the simplest, cheapest and most functional one so I don't have to bother about it. This also means I don't get involved in the business of displaying malas as status items or bli...

Re: Prostrations - Muscle Groups
If you do 100,000 prostrations incorrectly is that called Nwrongdro? Have to agree with above post, prostrations are a kind of yoga in constant flowing motion. If there is no thumping of bumping to be heard, yer probly doin' er right. If the cat panics and vanishes under the bed, your technique need...

Re: Theravada against mathematics
There is a gaping flaw in the argument. Infinities simply do not behave the same as the numbers we are used to. Example.... Suppose we have an infinite number of points. We can start counting them, numbering them 1,2,3,4,5..... Now if we look at the number line we can see it already has points label...

Two questions.
1) the title of thread.... how do we pronounce that exactly?
2) Can anyone take these teachings? Is it ok to bring a friend? Like, say, Mike Tyson?

Re: Lying: Is it Acceptable?
There are self centred actions that are virtuous. Seeking enlightenment is one of them. Any attempt at self improvement is going to be somewhat self centred. Although such attempts can spiral down into narcissism, the can also spiral up, leading to kindness, compassion and a commitment to ending suf...

And what if the first stall you stopped at was handing out glasses of poison? A Sutra person would renounce it.A Tantra person would transform it.A Dzogchen person would self liberate it. I'm not sure, but I think us Gelug types would just croak. Hopefully forgiving on the way down.

Thirty years in the grave, and Chogyam Trungpa can still ignite an impassioned discussion six pages long on Dharma Wheel. If for no other reason, we owe him a debt just for keeping our minds well exercised all these years.

Re: The Experience of Buddhism Sliding into Nihilism
When I started to explore Buddhism I found the idea that there is no permanent self troubling. It was hard to adjust to such a teaching after coming from a tradition that emphasized a highly personal view of a self so permanent that it was intimately integrated with a soul that survives death. I fe...

Re: Infinite Eons and Enlightenment
I just abandoned the unproven assumption that in infinite time all things must occur. For instance, suppose that the time before say, 2 billion years ago was mostly cyclical and instead of everything happening, a relatively small but still infinite number of things occurred over and over again. It ...

Re: Infinite Eons and Enlightenment
I think the problem in your logic is that presumes a finite start somewhere if something has not happened yet. If it is indeed infinite, then you would by default have to have experienced an infinite number of possibilities. Make sense? We are not talking about a large number in which there could b...

Re: Infinite Eons and Enlightenment
Hi all, I have a logical sticking point that I wrestle with occasionally in regards to Buddhism, reincarnation, and enlightenment. Basically, if awareness exists with infinite beginning and infinite end, then theoretically we should have experienced an infinite number of moments of awareness. This ...

WHAT YOU WANT TO GO THERAVADIN????? Ha ha just kidding. There was a teacher named Ajahn Chah whose teaching was remarkable. If you can find a group that carries forward a tenth of his integrity you'll still have better teachers than most people. In my world, he's the shining core of recent Theravada...
