Re: Buddhism and Ethical Conduct

Anyone who previously was heedless, and later develops a caring attitude, becomes as beautiful as the moon when parted from clouds, like Nanda, Angulimala, Ajatashatru, and Udayana.

Question on Naga Raja mantra

According to the FPMT, his mantra is

Tayatha Om Tathagata Bhagavan Naga Raja Svara Adhishthana Adhishtite Svaha

Considering that his name is Sanskrit is Nagesvararaja shouldn't the mantra say "Naga Svara Raja" or "Nage Svara Raja"?

Re: Knowing oneself as a bodhisattva

I think it's an issue of self judgement with verification from your Guru. “When you experience the conscious desire to achieve Buddhahood for the sake of sentient beings, you have developed a bodhicitta that resembles the outer layer of a piece of sugar cane. But if, in addition, you experience an i...

Not quite Nyingma but Garchen Rinpoche has a Drikung Kagyu center near Prescott.

Electric Disturbances - Magic?

Hello,

The last two weeks I've shocked myself three times and today the light was flickering in the room I was in.

I remember reading that this is a sign of spirit harm. Is that true?

Re: Admiring the Three Jewels

Buddha, Dharma and Sangha have been revered in word, thought and deed for a long time. This thread is for quoting some of the words revering those Gems. I revere you, with a color like gold, With the supreme marks, with a face like a flawless moon. I revere you, who are wholly engaged in peerless p...

Re: The attainment of the Arhats

The standard Sakya view is that arhats are not reborn anywhere. They remain in a samadhi of cessation (the samadhi body), similar to formless realm beings. They are indeed revived from this samadhi of cessation to continue on the bodhisattva path, starting from the beginning on the path of accumula...

The attainment of the Arhats

I was thinking about this today. Usually, people just say they're in the Arhat's sphere and after many eons the Buddhas rouse them and teach them Bodhicitta after which the Arhats attain Enlightenment. But let's think about this in detail. The first clue is that in the Mahayana, Buddhas are describe...

Re: Jhampa Shaneman

<shrugs> He seems accepted as a sincere practitioner by many but whether he is qualified to teach tantra I don't know. What in particular do you find heterodox Konchog? He seems to change things because "it makes sense to me this way" or "I like it this way". Things like visualizations that differ ...

Re: Jhampa Shaneman

I've heard of him. While not belonging to fpmt himself, he does seem to enjoy a pretty good reputation among many fpmt members. I've never met him myself but some of my very good friends speak very well of him. I think he has a center somewhere in mexico where one can do retreat for cheap. He is al...

Jhampa Shaneman

Hello,

What do you know about him? Is he legit?

He claims to have been a student of Ling Rinpoche and done a bunch of retreats. Also, that HHDL asked him to teach.

Can anyone verify?

He proposed a principle. This does not preclude gyalpo worship existing side by side in the case of those who wished add some philosophical sophistication. Basically, most religions, with the exception of Buddhadharma, begin as some kind of spirit worship. Which comes first? The humans seeking magi...

Re: Where does the Abrahamic God (יְהֹוָה) "fit" in Buddhist cosmology?

Malcolm, I recall you said that the Muslim god is a gyalpo, is the Jewish god a gyalpo then or a general preta? Is the Christian god the same being, or a different one? As for devas not being interested in human affairs, what about mundane protectors like Indra, Brahma and the like? Do you mean that...
