Re: Giving Up Masturbation

I respect your scholarship but I don’t agree at all with your libertarian social views, nor do I think they should be conflated.

Re: Giving Up Masturbation

Western culture went through the sexual revolution in the middle decades of the 20th Century. It completely changed societal attitudes towards sexual behaviours, relationships, ethics and identity. But now that has become 'the new normal' in Western culture, it's hard to remember what has changed, o...

Re: Interview with Co-Founder of Esalen

Yeah that makes sense. There were links to a few recent feature articles on them which mention their change to a more corporate-facing posture but didn't mention it being sold. Michael Murphy is 88 and looks 30 years younger.

Re: A Fundamental Practice?

I agree that the idea of 'no-practice' can often be, how shall we say, exploited by the lazy (note to self  ). What I think it's getting at is not to get fixated on technique or how-to or method. Bhikkhu Bodhi has a useful article called Vision and Routine.

Re: A Fundamental Practice?

But the practice of no practice should also be born in mind. So many people seem impressed by the idea of ‘practice’ - like ‘follow these steps’. Then the mind begins to cling to the idea of practice. I think it’s because we like to think it’s something we can do , something we can get good at . It’...

Re: Zen/Attain True Self

These kinds of questions invariably create very confused discussions with many conflicting replies. (There is a true self! Oh, no there's not!) Start with the basic point that you won't learn about actual Zen practice from any possible interaction via the Internet. It's just words on a screen, and i...

Re: Interview with Co-Founder of Esalen

There’s nothing in the coverage I’ve read about Esalen being sold, although there’s plenty of stories about it catering to the Silicon Valley technorati.

I’ve only ever read a couple of articles by Jeffrey Kipal. Information about his book on Esalen is here.

Re: Zen’s stand regarding ‘The Absolute’

In philosophy, the Absolute is "the sum of all being, actual and potential".[1] In monistic idealism, it serves as a concept for the "unconditioned reality which is either the spiritual ground of all being or the whole of things considered as a spiritual unity".[2] Article goes ...

From the times yesterday: A Latter-Day Rip Van Winkle Emerges, Blinking, Into the Post-Virus World https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/02/us/coronavirus-meditation.html That's the story that lead me to it. Re: Soto zen and problem of satori

I have been attending a Jodo service, or had been, until the virus came along and put everything on hold. I started attending a Pure Land sangha because I realised if enlightenment was dependent on my own rather slapdash efforts then I was going to be in deep trouble. When services start up again, I...

Re: Soto zen and problem of satori

this view is prevalent nowdays in soto monasteries and means just nothing to do, we are already enlightened, what is not true in our situation and conditions which we experience. Unfortunatly people stick to that kind of views thniking that all is all right. But the bitter exam will come together w...

Re: Getting bugs off lettuce

Put coffee grounds around your plants. It’s organic and bugs don’t like it, or so I’ve been told. There are also natural herbicide sprays, non-chemical, that likewise keep insects off without polluting the environment, although it probably doesn’t do ‘em a lot of good.

Re: Engaged Buddhism and Monastics

there are some monks who post here from time to time who may want to address your question. Myself, I am also simply a layman who is interested in and tries to practice Buddhist principles and meditation. So, philosophically speaking, there's a few different responses to this perceived dilemma. Firs...
