Re: the fifth precept, alcohol

It's a bit rich coming from me, so if you can drink sensibly then- as a layperson - then do it a little bit. Clearly the trick is not to get intoxicated and indulge, but for a lot of people it's a slippery slope. For every sensible person there's another nine that fall to some extent. I personally b...

Re: Synchronicity

Yes, I get the impression that folks here are referring to Kaplans law of the hammer, so synchronicity comes to mean that everything looks like a nail, but what you might need is a cloth or some WD40. In other words the interconnected-ness can be applicable albeit incompatible. One or two of my clos...

Re: something extremely uncomofortable happens when I lust

I'm not sure it's a very good idea being the universe and in charge of everything, especially if infinite sapient beings catch wind what with all the blaming going on. For example, I read an interesting rodent micro-climate study where everything was granted for the rodents and nothing done, suffice...

Re: Maintaining harmony?

I can see this as becoming an issue if the issue is raised by others: family and friends. So currently you're the one asking... they can't tell, but is your identity important? So do you sing from the rooftops and wear it on your sleeve so to speak? Well, you can do that maybe just not under the sam...

Re: Samatha Breath

Quite recently I had this experience where I was caught up in panic and anxiety. I tried to remember some teachings and what some of the people here have said, but more trying just didn't seem to work. After a while, I recall there was some observing taking place and resting into the position I was ...

ok, back to normal, chamomile tea only today. Try again. >> It occurred to me that focus is better when there are no options there. Most of the time there are so therefore a higher potential for the mind to wander !? Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm no expert, cause I should mind my manners especially o...

Re: Saunas, bath houses (and cannabis) in Vinaya texts

Cannabis (quote unquote) if you know what you're getting that is very important. The poor commercial sorts are dreadful, mark my words. I will not, in good conscience encourage this sort of behaviour, that is (a) people are going to experiment (b) want to have fun/be happier. There's stuff you can p...

Stand under a freezing wellspring, maybe that will get your attention. I mean most people don't do that, but I have wondered. I doubt i follow, but i like cold shower. :) Yes, no follow, not on the frontiers myself. In the past I think some brainwashing allowed me, anyway you are amazing. :focus: b...

Re: something extremely uncomofortable happens when I lust

It's great fun swinging from branch to branch, then comes security and the potential for ultimate gloom. that pretty much summarizes the home unit. Well actually that's my impression so far. So there's a safe platform, physically, and a 'fly too close to the sun' burning-ness. Fly around a bit, but ...

Re: arrogance

Yes, we create those walls to protect ourselves, but we should not rely upon them because they will stop us from any development. I suppose this is akin to a bookmark. IE you have confidence where you are, and cannot yet anticipate the next step.

Re: arrogance

This topic has inspired me to share a personal story. There was something that I got really good at, better than most people good at it, but at the time there was jealousy and disrespect there stemming from insecurity and arrogance. I had something to prove, even when I was living the dream. Then I ...

My impression is of a subtle distinction between influence and control, language permitting. Mitigate those 'whoops a daisy' moments all you want, but reality still kicks in you front door, and hopefully this isn't too off base.

Re: Seeking a guru

Yes, I see it as a problem If one person is almighty and the rest of us suck. Were all connected but separated at the same time. What ever i say, is potentially confounding but at the same time we are correct when we find common ground. Right, that's it for now.

Re: Questions on Meditation

Both are a nuisance IMO, so once out have to come in and once in have to go back to and fro. One without other is none at all. So my metaphor of breath is like a dog who wants to go out so it can come back in again. That said I'd go for a non binary approach so there's probably more colour than I th...

Re: Interconnectedness (and life)

This comes now to mind: HH Dalai Lama said one of the suffering in samsara is identity-lessness. Therefore we grasp always to an identity and this is one of the main causes we are experiencing a separation, and that is actually the suffering. :anjali: Since this is dharma and everyday life perhaps ...

Re: 5 minute meditations?

If your lungs are in good condition you can try counting breath. If you are really fit one whole in and out can last a good minute and before you know it quite a big chunk of time has passed. Also, you know, if you stop and think about it: 'I am this' and 'I am that' suffering arises. When you engag...
