Re: Karma

Yes the time to undergo suffering that is mostly not known. For instance 7 years of a dog or cat seems to be (equals) 1 human year. Another interesting fact would be that no composed thing can live for ever.... But how is time seen / experiencedin the other 5 realms? Best wishes KY[/color] Small co...

Re: 5 Wisdoms

Sangyey, I am now kicking my self for not buying that book by Thupten Jinpa, which is currently probably the most extensive collation of the various Blo-jong teachings in English, when I could! Can you tell me in which section that quote is, it sounds like a commentary to one of the root texts or is...

Re: Buddha figure on altar

No matter what it is made of, or how skilled or artistic the craftsman was, as Buddhist we still respect all representations as Buddhas themselves. It's preferrable to put Buddha Shakyamuni as the central figure on your altar.

Re: Signature in the Cell by Stephen Meyer

Hi Will, I am a little taken aback at this thread, given that the basic Buddhist view is that there is no beginning to time (beginningless time) as there would be endless regress of "what was before the beginning" and as Namdrol pointed out "who designed god/gods", but also intri...

Re: 5 Wisdoms

Hi Sangyey, . First, is that I wonder if they correlate to the 4 bodies of a Buddha or are they just seperate? The five wisdoms (mirror-like etc) correspond to five types of awareness potentials in the mind which have been 'purified'. When they aren't purified they manifest as kleshas (disturbing me...

Re: Sunyata and dependent origination

This is so obvious that I don't know why we are having an argument about it. Nothing can be said regarding the ultimate, since it's not conceptual. When we talk about emptiness, we talk about the ultimate. Buddhadharma is conceptual, thus a set of illusions to free one from illusion. It's the finge...

Re: Differences between the schools

As far as the nature of mind goes: most Gelug and Sakya teach that Buddha Nature is a seed and many Kagyu and most Nyingma teach that it is already fully present in some form in every sentient being. Kirt Perhaps regarding the Gelug view at least, it easier to understand that the 'seed' is the empt...

Re: Sunyata and dependent origination

Yes...but emptiness of Buddha is different from emptiness of an Arahant and Bodhisattva. In other words, what Buddha has realized is different from what Arahant and Bodhisattva have realized. Only Buddhas see through all phenomena but most Bodhisattvas and Arahants cannot. So true emptiness is Budd...

Re: Karma

I think I'm the guy who is always parroting "illusion-like not illusion" This kind of view is crypto-realisms. Things are either illusory, or they are real. There is no middle ground of "illusion-like". N Karma gives results that are experienced. Illusions do not function, excep...

Re: Karma

I think I'm the guy who is always parroting "illusion-like not illusion" karma is not an illusion. You experience it, the results and so forth. It might lack inherent existence but that doesn't make it an illusion. If it was all just illusion we could forget about working to be free from s...

Sadhu David! One Q though....is it of any necessity to allow the chat room to be have full visibility and prominence on the main page? Back at the sister site, their chat room is not so and perhaps like back on E-Sangha, this place could create, for the curious, a bar at the bottom of the m...

There is also the issue of the sixth Dalai Lama and the Seventh Dalai Lama living at the same time. The sixth was not killed. He was banned to Amdo. His autobiography has appeared. The present HHDL has indicated that he feels a strongest affinity to the second, fifth, sixth, and thirteenth Dalai La...
