Re: Is is possible to be Buddhist and Hindu?

So you are not going to answer ? Ok. But dialogue then becomes impossible. It may be of course that dialogue is not what you seek. When words mean what I want them to mean. When passages from books that have resonance for me and so I repeat them on a loop. When all dissention to my cherished beliefs...

Re: Is is possible to be Buddhist and Hindu?

Muni the following is not a trick question. I have no hidden agenda..my agenda is transparent. I think that you are a Hindu trying to fit Buddhadharma into a Hindu paradigm..
So to prove me wrong could you start by defining the word ' mind' as you habitually use it ?

Thank you..

Re: Is is possible to be Buddhist and Hindu?

See, I am a hands on sort of person...I am much more interested in what people do than hearing their opinions about opinions, or their analysis of texts.. I have written about it before, but one of the most dispiriting experiences I have ever had was visiting the Ramanashram in Tiru... ' By their fr...

Re: Is is possible to be Buddhist and Hindu?

I have not belittled anything. I have merely pointed out that the ideas and notions about liberation and freedom between Hinduism and Buddhism are not even slightly commensurable. For example, if you have a mountain in the east, and another in the west, do you tell someone that by climbing a mounta...

Re: Is is possible to be Buddhist and Hindu?

Ah..you see I am afraid that taints are what characterises my being..so such considerations are far too lofty for me.

Re: Is is possible to be Buddhist and Hindu?

Perhaps you would like to explain to me what my intention is ? I thought I was trying to understand your posts..which are many, and which I seldom understand. As far as I can tell you believe that ' the mind ' ( which you do not define ) somehow ' conquers itself.'.by ' non grasping'. Who or what co...

Re: Is is possible to be Buddhist and Hindu?

' Ego' ? How does that western psychological construct work in a Buddhist context ?

So you are saying that the 'opposite of an independent self' somehow frees us ?

Re: Is is possible to be Buddhist and Hindu?

Interesting, Herbie. :soapbox: Truth is not in words, whether they are said by the most holy beings and the greatest masters, it is not in words. Even words written by or said by Awaken masters right now. they are only pointing. Wisdom is not in thoughts. http://buddhism.about.com/od/becomingabuddh...

Just to add CTR had real and extensive dialogue with a number of Christian contemplatives...including Thomas Merton who he regarded as a close friend, Dom Basil Pennington and Dom Aelred Graham among others.

Re: Is is possible to be Buddhist and Hindu?

Rinpoche’s students had been raised in Christian or Jewish environments, and regarded these conferences with ambivalence. Many were frankly puzzled by, or even hostile to, the events. As Reginald Ray commented, “typical of new converts, we shared a resistance and lack of curiosity toward other reli...

Re: Is it possible to be enlightened, but not teach Buddhism

Sounds like a pratyekabuddha. Buddhas and bodhisattvas can also teach non-buddhist teachings if they are more efficacious for the audience. But not if those teachings actually contradict Buddhadharma. All non-Buddhist teachings contradict buddhadharma - that's what makes them non-buddhist. But not ...

Re: Is is possible to be Buddhist and Hindu?

Boomerang, Just in case you were unaware, there is a sister forum to this one, Dhamma Wheel . It's focused on Theravada Buddhism whereas this forum is focused on Mahayana/Vajrayana Buddhism. These traditions are different enough to merit their own forums. I imagine that if you ask your question ove...

Re: Is is possible to be Buddhist and Hindu?

Yes, the entire quotation I gave was full of oxymorons. The point is that nonduality is beyond words, so no amount of discourse is going to prove or invalidate Advaita Vedanta. There's a verse in a famous poem by Shankara where he says that the study of the Vedas is useless to one ignorant of Brahm...

Re: Is is possible to be Buddhist and Hindu?

In a nondual reality there can be no such thing as objective existence. Objective and subjective are dualities, so yes. However you yourself just used the phrase "nondual reality". I do not find that to be an oxymoron. Here is a quotation from one of my Advaita books. I cannot be objectif...

Re: Is is possible to be Buddhist and Hindu?

Is this thread still talking about if it's possible to be Buddhist and Hindu? Dunno if it is or not. Unless we have followed one of those paths to their completion we can only voice our own views or..the views of one's teachers. My root Guru operated at a time when many streams of spiritual thought...

Re: Is is possible to be Buddhist and Hindu?

Isn't there potential for a sharp divide between folk Buddhist and Hindu practices, and their (I think) relative compatibility, and the philosophical aspects of both traditions? Not merely in potential but in actuality. Particularly acute BECAUSE of commonalities that mask deeper fundamental diverg...
