Re: Self-Ordained Monks (split)
If one chooses to follow the vinaya and pratimoksha vows and live as a monk would, they can certainly do that. And if they ever meet actual ordained sangha, they can request to officially be monked. I’m sure they would be welcomed.

Re: Rendering 'Atman' as 'Self' is misleading
And before you ask, the soul I speak of is the subtle body that endlessly moves between different physical bodies in samsara. I respect your point of view. But please note, this is precisely the point where Buddhist theory disagrees. And not that it matters to me personally, but you may get some ne...

Re: On fetters
Just to be clear, on third stage of enlightenment (non returner), the fetter of sensual desire is destroyed. So anybody who is higher or on the level of non returner, will not do anything which sensual desire such as art, music, entertainment, tasty food? And never will? …or does it simply mean the...

Re: Prosperity without greed or lust for wealth
I have this conflict within my mind. On one hand I'd like to create abundance/prosperity in my life (and others), so I don't suffer, but at the same time, it all seems futile (the wish/pursuit AND the achieved goal) and most importantly, greedy. It is probably true that if a person isn’t seeking so...

Re: How does one get over the fear of being cheated on in a relationship?
Fear of something means that you have anxiety about it happening the future. If you do not have a logical reason for this fear, then there is no reason to have this fear. For example: If person #1 cheated on you, and now they are out of your life, and You are now in a relationship with person #2, it...

Re: Rendering 'Atman' as 'Self' is misleading
always seen the difference between atman and anatman as a petty semantic one. In my tradition absolutely all of reality is empty and without self- except for atman, the core of all reality. It can't rightfully be called "Self" either given that it's the heart of all things. The universe, ...

Re: Counting breaths while meditation
I would like to add (although not about breaths, but about reducing distraction) is to take a moment to still your body. We soon learn, when we begin siting, just how busy our minds are. But we don’t often realize how busy our bodies are, just in terms of the energy bouncing around in it. Even day t...

Re: Strange behaviour
Ive noticed that many people have some kind of obsession on many levels but with the same idea, f.e.: its a funeral and many try to not smile, because its serious event, but somehow a smile wants to come up. Why? growing up, I always smiled almost uncontrollably at funerals or talk of funerals. I h...

In whose mind does the fear arise?
In yours, or in the mind of
your (potential) partner?

Re: Form, self, emptiness etc...
But i control the mind, which is changing, but the ability of my 'i', which is will, the capability of deciding, wouldn't call it awareness, i called it being an entity, the capability of having to decide - makes my mind. The point that the Buddha makes is that even though we experience awareness a...

Well then, if you throw a baseball at a soccer match, don’t be surprised if nobody swings at it.Jokingfish wrote: ↑Fri Nov 18, 2022 3:07 pm Also, not a fan of non duality, completely a dualist I am
Non-duality pretty much comes with the whole Buddhist package.
A Taoist forum would probably offer you a better conversation.

Re: Form, self, emptiness etc...
Im not well knowledgeable on these terms, so id like to discuss this. Id say that form is not emptiness, and self is real in a way. Brain controls the body, and current entity controls the brain. This entity is the core being of the brain, which is the mind. You are saying that mind=self. If that’s...

My Thai monk friend teaches to inhale “bu—” and exhale “—ddho” This is from the book “Now is the Knowing” by Venerable Ajahn Sumedho <<<Many forest bhikkhus in the North-East of Thailand use the word ‘Buddho’as their meditation object. That makes sense. My friend is a forest-tradition monk.

Re: Counting breaths while meditation
Is counting itself a distraction? There is a teaching by Mingyur Rinpoche, which I think is on YouTube, where he explains that all mind-focusing techniques are still distractions, but as he describes the mind using the old analogy of a monkey jumping around in a little house looking out all of the ...

hmm, interesting I usually do just one, make the one last and the next one is also one.. so a constant returning not 2 or 3 or whatever. same thing. :thanks: So, a person could just count “one…one…one…” over and over again? Sounds good. My Thai monk friend teaches to inhale “bu—” and exhale “—ddho”

Re: Where to get tsa-tsa clay?
I recently transcribed a teaching on Tsatsas (and stupas) and as long as the clay is clean, it’s okay to use. So, since a lot of times clay is found in creek beds, if the water is dirty, like an open sewer or polluted water, you’d want to avoid using that clay. However the teacher also spoke of maki...

Re: Counting breaths while meditation
Is it useful? It makes me able to be less distracted for meditation, but the counting itself could be a distraction, yes? Yes, and yes. I was taught to count 21 breaths and start over. If you try to see how far you can count, then you might lose the important quality of meditation being ‘without a ...

Re: a poll about fifth precept
There is a story my lama told during a five-precepts ceremony. A monk went with a woman to a cave where there was a goat, where she persuaded him to have some wine. He ended up getting drunk, killed the goat, and had sec with the woman. The lama explained that the putpyif the fifth precept was to pr...
