Re: Misleading Christian videos about Buddhism

I would advise you not to spend too much time arguing against such groundless views. People believe all kinds of things. If they are going to make outlandish statements, the chance of changing their viewpoint through argument is not very good. 'People can't be reasoned out of things they weren't re...

Hello Monsoon, :) It is good to meet you. I think the board's search features are broken at the moment, so I suspect it isn't you failing at searches as much as it is the search failing you. At home I recite certain things in Pali or English, depending on length and availability, and chant in Vietna...

Re: Pureland study group anyone?

I think getting openly dismissed and ridiculed by other "Buddhists" online can make people a little gun shy. You really got kicked off other sites for discussing Pure Land Buddhism? Wow, that's surprising! ...the moderator started harassing me with emails. One of those said that the forum is called...

Re: Interested in becoming buddhist, not a clue where to sta

My advice, as far as texts, is to get a copy of the Dhammapada and read it through. I got my first copy from the library and read through it several times before it was due back. It is simple, yet profound enough to get the gears in the mind turning on the Dhamma. I'm not sure if it was intended for...

Hi there, Josh. :)

Lurking is OK. I do a lot of that too but come out of hiding every once in a while.

Welcome to Dharma Wheel!

Re: Converting to Buddhism from Christianity

Naturally I am facing some conflicts. What will my family think, how will I unlearn the teachings of Catholicism and how can I transition into it. I went through a little of this too, particularly in the "What will my family think?" category. I was absolutely terrified that my wife would suddenly l...

Re: "The Bin Laden of Buddhism"

The abbot was giving his opinion ... he said was that the Tamils should be driven out and that if they didn’t go they should all be killed. -Broken Buddha pg. 22 A rather shameful sentiment for a monk to proclaim, assuming the source is accurate (which I cannot personally say either way). Even doub...

In case you have future matters on language/translation, there's a subforum for language where any language/translation expert can assist you further there. Re: Translation of Vietnamese, ideas/help?

Awesome! :) I suppose that is a huge part of the problem for me, as I had no idea they were "porting" Sanskrit into the mix (I have studied no Sanskrit, only Pali, so I have no frame of reference to even start to realize that on my own). Without knowing that, I would have had no idea that this was l...

Translation of Vietnamese, ideas/help?

Well, I've been going to this Vietnamese temple for about half a year now and I've managed to pick up a number of phrases in Vietnamese, but I guess I just haven't been able to find the resources to do a lot of accurate translating "in bulk." I've acquired a book that appears to be a sutra collectio...

I've recently read BDK's translation, but could certainly go over it again. I won't say for certain that I'll have anything to add to the discussion, but I'll be watching in case I do.

Re: Book Suggestion

I thank you all for the great suggestions! The Amitabha Sutra short version is short enough to print on your home. Sometimes i will print small books. For example, i have a printed version of Pratyutpana Sutra. Just an idea. I'll certainly consider it if I complete my current text prior to acquiring...

Re: 7th Precept

Different monks take different vows depending on the tradition they ordain in. The first five precepts are generally the same throughout most traditions but after that they begin to differ. There isn't just "one set of precepts" that all Buddhist monks around the world follow. Many monks never take...

Book Suggestion

Hello friends, I'm looking for some reading material, in particular the "Pure Land Sutras," in a non-electronic media (in other words, a book). While I have a number of books and sutras saved to the computer, I have found that PDFs and webpages, unless very short, are incredibly difficult to keep my...

Re: Yes or No ...

Did you admire Mahatma Gandhi or Martin Luther King as a child? No, not really... I didn't know of Mahatma Gandhi until later in life (well, except as a leader in the computer game "Civilization," and I didn't really understand King's civil rights issues until later in life. Do you ever post on Dha...
