Re: Anonymity and Trolling
It [Jeepers post] is pithy and not at all illogical. I think it could only be interpreted as pithy by those who agree with the assumptions and implied value judgement. It's not possible for Jeepers to know that anyone, except for maybe himself, would prefer discussing this topic a great deal more t...

Re: Anonymity and Trolling
this is the kind of thing you would much rather be discussing than Buddhism as such. Hence the thread. Don't worry, I won't bother you further. This. I've read this several times but can't quite decipher what this is supposed to mean. I don't understand why Jeepers assumes anyone would "much r...

Re: Anonymity and Trolling
You say Crowley actively worked to changed views? They'd call that trolling in some circles. Trolls are of course evil to the core.

Re: Anonymity and Trolling
... It caused me to think these people are obviously hypocrites just like my christian family and I started looking for something non-hypocritical. I ended up studying Aleister Crowley for several years as a result! :rolling: Lol, I first learned of Mr. Crowley via an Ozzy Osbourne song of the same...

Re: Anonymity and Trolling
The most specific part of the Nobel Eightfold Path that may apply here is Right Speech, I suppose. Don't lie - "He speaks the truth, holds to the truth, is firm, reliable, no deceiver of the world..." Don't create discord - "What he has heard here he does not tell there to break those...

Re: Anonymity and Trolling
Jeepers raises an interesting question. How would someone who is practicing the Eightfold Path deal with a troll? take them at face value until their behavior is clearly disruptive and unproductive..ask them to start being more productive and to discuss in good faith, if not, leave the conversation...

Re: Anonymity and Trolling
Instead of dealing Greg/Dorje's hypothetical example... Ah, Sherab Dorje is Gregkarvanaros (spelling is probably wrong). That's kind of a relief, I was getting concerned that someone who I've never corresponded with had something against me. Almost every forum I have been on, I have felt I have bee...

Re: Anonymity and Trolling
It seems to be true doesn't it? Analyzing online forums with only taking into account the two dimensions anonymity and trolling would be nonsensical, imo.Malcolm wrote:A perfect example of trolling.Thrasymachus wrote:This is a nonsense discourse for analyzing forums: anonymous people and their trolling.

Re: Anonymity and Trolling
So, I guess we'll just have to go with the racists and car owners as examples of what to expect then? I guess so. Generally it's best to not hold tightly to expectations, or other sorts of prejudgements. What's the chance of finding a bunch of wise and compassionate monks hanging out on an internet...

Re: Anonymity and Trolling
Ultimately it comes down to the receptivity (and capacity for objectivity) of the audience and the moderator, as to whether a statement will be considered trolling or not. Your point has never been unclear, Sherab Dorje, it's just rather meaningless. You're basically only saying that people have th...

Re: Anonymity and Trolling
This is a nonsense discourse for analyzing forums: anonymous people and their trolling. Every forum has an alleged and stated purpose, which is of course always nonsense. Only by participating do you learn its unwritten purpose which the staff will never admit to. Every forum has written rules, whi...

Re: Anonymity and Trolling
The exact same intention? If you're serious, can you explain how in your example the intention is exactly the same. Exact same intention: to prove that Datsuns are (objectively) better than Fords and thus prove that Ford owners are happily excited, merry, keenly alive and exuberant, having high spi...

Re: Anonymity and Trolling
As a current moderator on one forum and past moderator on several others, I can say that it is possible to identify trolling without speculating on the motivation of the poster. I can presume that the motivation is to provide jollies to the poster, but that isn't necessary to identify it, and there...

Re: Anonymity and Trolling
I'm not sure about trolling as the definition can be debated (see above). But I think having anonymity means we can be someone or something we're not. Sometimes this can be a good thing, such as a shy person being more open and talkative. But it also tends to make people less afraid to be confronta...

Re: Anonymity and Trolling
That's a pretty bizarre statement as presented. Might want to leave out the part in parenthesis. Anyway, yeah that would be a troll, or maybe just a direct insult. Really? I guess that would depend on how you define the term "gay" and whether you consider low petrol consumption a more imp...
