Re: Is life a illusion?

This is a classic misunderstanding. Stick your hand into a fire and you will find out that there is a big difference between an intellectual grasp of the concept of non-substantiality and the reality you experience. Anyway, Buddhism has never said that life IS an illusion (compared to what?), but r...

Re: Buddhism Green Anarchism: Opinions?

You (all) might like to think about where anyone in Central or South America could go to get away from starvation, death squads, etc. Starvation in Central and South America: The UN claims that approx. 1/3rd of the population suffers from food insecurity. ~43.2 M people suffer from hunger (much of ...

Re: Buddhism Green Anarchism: Opinions?

You (all) might like to think about where anyone in Central or South America could go to get away from starvation, death squads, etc. Starvation and death squads are much less common in Central or South America than they were in the 80's and before. I don't have immediate statistics but for example...

Re: Buddhism Green Anarchism: Opinions?

Maybe Buddhists should warn the millions of people risking everything trying to move here (to the United States) before it’s too late. Because their own homelands have been plundered, exploited and destabilized to the point of utter squalor by the US-centralized empire? Ah yes, that certainly speak...

The Shorter Devata Sutra, 84000.co

The Shorter Devatā Sūtra , ལྷའི་མདོ་ཉུང་ངུ། (lha’i mdo nyung ngu), Alpadevatāsūtra Summary While staying in Śrāvastī, the Buddha is approached by an unnamed “divine being,” who inquires as to what behavior merits rebirth in the higher realms. In response, the Buddha explains, in a series of concise...

Re: What are options for an insect infestation?

This Play Bug Vacuum is a good option. I used it to completely remove a sudden infestation although it took days. It is best for little flying creatures - not great for ants though although it gets some of them.

Re: Machig Labdron Wisdom from an Old Lady

This is wonderful! It seems to be a condensed version of Machig's Last Instructions. As it happens, I was just reading that text earlier today in the Jérôme Edou book Machig Labdrön and the Foundations of Chöd . Yes, that is correct although I have no idea where I got a condensed version from. For ...

Re: Buddhism Green Anarchism: Opinions?

I've been really interested in public benefit corporations and other similar enterprises for a while, and studied up on them. If some people came to me and said they wanted to do something like that, I'd help them set it up pro bono and do what I could to help them secure financing. I feel like ent...

Re: Is it ok to practice Vajrasattva mantra meditation without oral transmission

Hi I would like to finally engage with dzogchen, with the sangha, find a teacher. I am suffering tremendously and I would like to purify my karma and I think it's for time a change, to make that step. Before I go and find a teacher, or master, is it possible or beneficial to practice this mantra? T...

Re: Buddhism Green Anarchism: Opinions?

Green anarchism is a form of anarchism that brings together "green" politics - environmental beliefs such as animal rights - with anarchism, meaning that this form of anarchism is tinged by an environmental feeling. Does this exist or no? Is this a viable option, as both a lifestyle and a...

Re: Buddhism Green Anarchism: Opinions?

And it was an identity trip for all the green anarchists I hung out with. Almost as much of an identity trip as vegans today. Must be difficult being the only one "keeping it real" in a landscape littered with posers. What did Occupy Wall Street accomplish? The reaction to it demon...

Re: Recommended teachers who are genuinely awake?

I would like some guidance on where to go from here. I have been on the spiritual “path” for 10-years, reading every book I can get my hands on (I know this is not as effective as direct experience.) But I feel that many of these teachers and authors are not “awake.” .... Are there any teachers or ...

Re: Politics in dharma center - article

It seems better to me that those who portend to educate others on the Dharma maintain a delineation between conventional teaching and personally held political conviction, so as not to muddle or confuse one or the other. ... I see no contradiction between being strongly committed to one's political...

Re: Politics in dharma center - article

Kindness and compassion are those inherent human characteristics (although in truth they are the characteristics of all sentient beings), first chapter, "Jewel Ornament of Liberation", Gampopa. I will have to disagree with Gampopa on this point. I do not believe that any human characteris...

Re: Politics in dharma center - article

Contrary to this, an emergent “awakened” society would need to embody compassion, kindness, and desire for social justice in a politically viable and collective form. This was exactly the Social Democrat/Democracy objective of northern, western and partly central Europe in the mid-late 1800's and r...

Re: Dream Yoga struggles

My dream yoga guru suggested taking short naps and practicing dream yoga at those times. I was able to make some headway doing that. This was challenging for me because I don't like to take naps. Also doing this requires actually setting a specific time aside to do this rather than just attempting ...
