Re: "Attack of the White Buddhists" by Justin Chin

In Chinese restaurants waiters sometimes comment 'Oh! my goodness you can actually use chopsticks' or 'I cannot believe that you understand Cantonese!'. I am tempted to reply 'Oh! my goodness you are wearing a suit and tie!!!'.

Re: General book on Tibetan Buddhism for the non-practitione

Professor Samuel's other book 'Civilized Shamans: Buddhism in Tibetan Societies' should be compulsory reading for Tibetan Buddhists, and it will answer just about all your questions. However it is quite academic and not exactly light reading, as the reviewer explains it is '...dense but rewarding......

If you are ten years old then perhaps such views are understandable. Oh, the irony. I may only be nine...

Re: How NOT to Get Arrested in China

As for the video, it's a little over the top. The Tibetan flag on the shirt, yeah, that's probably problematic. Not sure about the Taiwanese hat. There's actually quite a bit of back and forth between China and Taiwan. There are elements of China, especially in the larger cities, that are pretty hi...

Re: Tulpas

As I already said, there are Dzogchenpas in all lineages of Tibetan Buddhism! A few brilliant examples are: the Third Karmapa, Rangjung Dorje (Kagyu), The Fifth, Thirteenth, and Fourteenth Dalai Lamas (Gelug). The reality is that there are three traditions that have Dzogchen; Nyingma, Bon and Kagyu...

A ) You have no idea what involvement if any, I have with Tibetan medicine. B) Among my many faults delusions of grandeur do not feature ( greatly ). For all I know you are really a fat bloke called Reggie who has a comb-over and lives in Hull. As for 'delusions of grandeur' they are par for the co...

It is said that Shantideva was a scholar and master of debate but did show this to the other monks....The point being is that Shantideva had a deep and profound understanding of the Buddhist cannon, he just kept his knowledge a secret. You can read about this on http://www.khandro.net and other pla...

Re: Contemporary tertons of Eastern Tibet

The Shantideva I am thinking about was a Madhyamaka scholar as well as a bodhisattva. Maybe you had someone else in mind? Arya-Shantideva was originally a monk nicknamed 'Bhusuku' who was persecuted by the other monks for being a simpleton. One day he prayed to Manjusri and the Bodhisattva appeared...

Re: Is it possible to get a religious vaccine exemption?

Western medicine is indeed flawed in terms of generally focusing on treating the symptoms instead of the root of the illness. Some believe that modern Scientific medicine is the true descendent of the Knidic school of Ancient Greek Medicine which was so lambasted by Hippocrates for focusing entirel...

Re: Contemporary tertons of Eastern Tibet

I'm willing to brush aside that you're involved just as much in philosophy with your position as I am with mine. The question is, though, would you mind explaining precisely how simply staring into the sky with no instruction, introduction, or concrete method--or talking to statues--can bring about...
