Re: Taking Refuge

Tell them that the methods of purification that one can receive through taking refuge are by far greater compared to not purifying negativity at all through not entering Buddhism, No one is perfect at keeping vows at first that is why we make purification an essential practice. :namaste:

Re: Lam Rim study/practice

Some people move quickly through each topic and others spend a long time deepening their understanding. Initially, I think it is fine to move through the cycle of topics fairly quickly until one develops more understanding. Then, the pace (entirely up to the individual) slows and we might spend mor...

Re: Lama Tsongkhapa as a deity.

The Guru Yoga instructions in which Lama Tsongkhapa is visualised as a Deity comes from the Kadam Emanation Scripture that was given to Je Tsongkhapa by Manjushri himself. There are two principal yogas related to Je Tsongkhapa - The Ganden Lhagyema or Hundreds of Deities of the Joyful Land and Lama...

Re: Gelug View of Dzogchen?

Buton Rinczen Drup (1290-1364 r. n.e.) made the collection of scripture generally known as the Old Nartang (snar thang) edition of the Kangyur (bka' 'gyur) and Tengyur (bstan 'gyur). In it He did not include such things as termas of Inner Tantras and other Tantras of Dzogchen because they seem to b...

Re: Gelug View of Dzogchen?

I don't think so. The Gelug tradition is not as monolithic an as it first appears. I don't think the Ganden Tripa of the time consented to Sera Jey taking as its yidam and protector Hayagriva. This was decided autonomously by the monastery. Nor did the Ganden Tripa of the time consent to the popula...

Re: Gelug View of Dzogchen?

Je Tsongkhapa did not include Dzogchen in his formulation so it is not practised officially within the Gelug tradition. Caz, What do you mean by "practiced officially"? Who decides that? Certainly Lama Tzongkhapa's works form the core of the Gelug tradition, but the tradition is a constan...

Re: Gelug View of Dzogchen?

Hi, I am not entirely new to Tibetan Buddhism anymore, I've studied for over a year now. But I don't know hardly anything about Gelug. How does the Gelug school view Dzogchen? I have heard hearsay that Gelug treats Dzogchen as heretical because they claim that Dzogchen proposes atman. Also, do you ...

Re: Hi from Texas

I first found the sister theravata site and they kindly referred me to over here since I am Mahayana. I attend the new Kadampa tradition temple in Arlington TX, which is in the Dallas Fort Worth metroplex in North Texas. I do not wish to trouble anyone, but I have a couple of questions. First some ...

Re: Why follow one tradition of Buddhism?

With respect to Lama Phabonkhapa it would be fairly foolish to consider him sectarian when he incorporated the the Vajrayogini practice from the Sakya system. It is proper to consider him sectarian based on the numerous grossly sectarian comments scattered in his collected works. M And yet when he ...

Re: Why follow one tradition of Buddhism?

This is a gross mischaracterization of the story I related and I am not sure what benefit a response will do, but I should respond as now I fear Geshe la will be framed in an unfair light. (I should know better that to tell personal stories on online forums!) Of course Geshe Sonam is devoted to Lam...

Re: Why follow one tradition of Buddhism?

One tradition may contain enough fodder for a lifetime, but what if a person simply finds it isn't producing results? One can mix traditions concurrently or consecutively, and I can't see that becoming a master is any swifter or more complete through limiting study to one tradition. Results depend ...

Re: Why follow one tradition of Buddhism?

I think it is good to have roots in a tradition. But one's branches should reach out for nourishment in all directions. I realize that there are a number of lamas who insists on lineage affiliation, and I am sure they have their reasons. However, as a practitioner I find this view rather dated and ...

Why ? Because one is all you need there is enough material contained within one to take up a life times worth of practice.

Tsem Rinpoche explains it.

Re: Is Dzogchen Compatible with the Madhyamika Prasangika POV ?

Whether or not Madhyamaka fails in exceeding an intellectual approach depends upon whether or not the meditator fails to exceed and intellectual approach. Madhyamaka is based on intellectual analysis. It has no form of vipashyana which is uniquely distinguished from sūtrayāna in general. When it co...

Yes, the difference is however that Prasanga is just an intellectual analysis where as Dzogchen is experiential.

Only Buddha experienced his mothers kindness where as all Buddhist practitioners experience Buddha's kindness through his setting the wheel in mo...
