Re: Sanskrit/Chinese/Tibetan dictionaries?

Hi all, I am attempting to work though the Sanskrit of Vasubandhu's thirty verses. I only have an intermediate knowledge of Sanskrit - I have worked though a text book and can confortably read (but perhaps not fully grasp) Sutras such as the Diamond but never mastered the various past tense constru...

I'm afraid a quick search failed to produce anything. You might wish to try variant spellings of his name and searching in Google Books and so on, you might find something that way.

Re: Mahayana Tripitaka

I was wondering what was the most complete English Mahayana Tripitaka was? Obviously, it's all available in Chinese, Tibetan, Pali, etc. But most takes on an English version is severely lacking. Not all texts in the Chinese canon are found in the Tibetan, and vice versa. The Taisho edition of the C...

Re: the character 歩

Do you two mind if I reproduce what you have written here in my martial-arts related conversation? The specific issue is that the person I am talking to says that he believes the character might exclusively refer to physical steps. I suspected this was not so, and that was my reason for asking. It ...

Re: Chinese Buddhist temples: wooden boards with adages of wisdom and other elements

Perhaps different in China, but in Japan, the guardians at the gates of temples are 仁王, emanations of Vajrapani and called 金剛力士, not of the Four Heavenly Kings. Apparently called 哈哼二将 in China? The mouth open is called 哈将 and the mouth closed is called 哼将 Maybe this is helpful? Its about these guar...

Re: Chinese Buddhist temples: wooden boards with adages of wisdom and other elements

Sorry, I misread part of your post: the two pillars flanking the entrance are just that, pillars, not steles. I am not sure if the wooden boards have a specific name though. And I was thinking that temple looked familiar; I've been there, and just now found some better pictures of the inscriptions, ...

Re: Chinese Buddhist temples: wooden boards with adages of wisdom and other elements

They should be two of the four Heavenly Kings, which you can read about here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_Heavenly_Kings The board merely has the name of the temple inscribed on it, from right to left. In this instance, 無為寺, Wuwei Temple, which has a nice Taoist ring to it. You might find oth...

歩 Hi all, this is a character being brought up in the context of a detailed discussion of (historically Okinawan) martial arts and their possible connection to Buddhism I am having. I am told that this character means "steps" or "stages" roughly, is this so, and would this chara...

I think that basis for Zangdok Palri is the Island of Madagascar for various reasons, yes. I also think the basis for the Shambhala myth is Afghanistan. But apart from being the pure visions of this one and that, I certainly do not think these places physically exist on our planet anymore, and for ...

Re: Why drugs are bad for meditators?

Habitual use or rarely as a leisure activity? As a leisure activity it's not a bad way to test your realization. If you are using habitually clearly you have little to no realization and are trapped in a cycle of drug abuse. Personally when I am getting surgery I like all the drugs please. Being aw...

Re: Richard Dawkins - The Enemies of Reason - Part 1: Slaves to Superstition

Blackmore's wikipedia biography, quoting herself, says she is not a Buddhist, and presumably is just interested in meditation.
I doubt that Dawkins could find fault with sitting down quietly for an hour a day, but then again, he just might.

Re: Magic and Mystery in Tibet (David-Neel)

In spite of the two dozen books on the woman, there is still a lot that could be said about Alexandra David-Neel, whose life has become something of a cottage industry for biographers of all stripes. Sure, there’s a lot of fictionalised and exaggerated stuff in there, she tried to earn a living from...

Re: Vajrakilaya book

You can read KIndle format books on your pc or mac using the free Amazon program, called "kindle for pc" or "kindle for mac".
If that is still unsatisfactory, you can convert the files using Calibre, which is a free piece of software.
