Namo Amitabha Buddha
Is it not better to recite in the original sanskrit as written in the sutras rather than Namu Amida Butsu or Namo Amituofo?

Re: Why is Amitabha absent in American Zen and TB?
I have only had contact with a dozen or so Zen groups in the USA, though a good number more teachers than that. These three assertions are not borne out by my experience at all. Regarding the third: you are saying that belief in Bodhisattvas, etc. was out of the question, i.e. negated/forbidden, at...

Re: Why is Amitabha absent in American Zen and TB?
Thanks for the illuminating answers, everyone. I suppose the absence of Amitabha in American Zen is due to its roots in Soto versus Chan. And that may simply be due to historical reasons for who came to teach in the US and when. From my experience american zen is very watered down. Literal rebirth ...

Re: Where are the bodhisattvas?
Bodhisattvas are everywhere. Doesn't matter though. Just worry about your own karma. That is what will take you to the other shore.

Re: Difference in attainments
But if it did end then Buddhas would too enter into the samadhi of cessation like they already do temporarily after the universe gets destroyed. Nirvana is not nirodhasamapatti (samadhi of cessation). Otherwise yes, that is one of the interpretations, and that's why bodhisattvas are said to delay t...

Re: Difference in attainments
That's why I said no bodhisattvas. If there are no sentient beings, what are the bodhisattvas holding back for? Samsara never ends, there are infinite sentient beings, and buddha-nature is permanent. In other words, while Hinayana can be misunderstood as annihilationist, Mahayana can equally be cal...

Re: Difference in attainments
Let's assume there are no sentient beings and no bodhisattvas, just Buddhas. There would be no point of form kayas. Compassion would be meaningless. What samadhi would a Buddha have then? I think it would have to be cessation. True. The ultimate destination in Mahayana is cessation as well once sam...

Arahats don't progress towards Buddhahood. Once they enter parinirvana then that's it for them according to early Mahayana.

Re: According to Mahayana, is everything our karma?
For a long time I've had the understanding that in Mahayana Buddhism, absolutely everything we experience in life is the result of our karma, while in Theravada Buddhism there are exceptions. However, I don't really remember where I learned this from. What do you think? That's the way I've read it....

Re: Buddha Fields & Pure Lands
I think Buddha field is the more correct translation from sanskrit. The name Pure Land (Jìngtuzōng) was invented in China. Regardless, both have the same meaning.
