Mind Training -The Great Collection translated by Thupten Jinpa. Really a treasure and excellent resource for putting into practice the lojong trainings as they have been originally taught. Thats an awesome book. The next LOTC is going to be really good too. It has a lamrim style text in it by Saky...

Re: Very confused about samaya and an empowerment
Yeah but it doesn't mean you don't have samaya with other teachers. Also as I understand it, samayas come with every HYT empowerment. If someone attends such an empowerment and thinks "I'm not going to take the samaya" then IMO one also won't receive the empowerment at all. No samaya, no ...

It definitely could be Berzin.

Re: Very confused about samaya and an empowerment
If specific vows were not mentioned and you did not have the intention to take them, well... For beginners most empowerments (nowadays) do not contain any formal vows (samaya). Just do your practice, have faith in the teacher and everything will be just fine! And, in general, every ti...

What about the 'grong 'jug' term that follows phoba? I cannot figure out what it means from the four example translations I see.

Re: Phoba, Phowa literal meaning
The word phowa on its own doesnt have a consciousness part to it. That is more contextual to the practice. The small "a" at the beginning is silent, and is in most cases in Tibetan spelling. As far as I can tell the word apho ba without context is merely about movement. There are also many...

Re: Phoba, Phowa literal meaning
The word is about movement.
apho ba is to move, to migrate, to transfer.
Thus the "transference of consciousness" explanatory translation.
Is that what you are looking for?

My take is that selflessness of self refers to emptiness of "me" or "I" while selflessness of phenomena (this word has multiple definitions here) refers to our view of phenomena, whether or not we take them to be mind-independent.
You've got the gist of it Dave.

Re: Very confused about samaya and an empowerment
Hey Shemmy, Samaya is interesting and there is a lot that you can learn about the subject. It can definitely be a scary thing when we are first starting out but once you get used to practice etc. your anxieties will subside. Here are the basic Vajrayana vows: (1) Scorning or deriding our vajra maste...

The problem is really the political significance of the "office" of Karmapa. Without the political significance the Karmapa could manifest multiple emanations and it probably wouldnt be an issue. Take the Khyentse lineage for example. There are multiple emanations of Khyentse Wangpo and th...

Re: Seeing the Guru as Perfect
Just like in your ngondro thread Challenge, don't force it. It takes time, sometimes in takes a long time to find either the right guru or the right place within yourself for real guru devotion to take root. It took me a long time to grow enough to actually be ready for authentic devotion and it too...

Pretty much, yes. It isn't a set number as much as "more". If I do one mala, I should have done two. That there is the trouble Challenge. Try to feel your practice, not what you think you should do with it. It feels like a burden right now because you are looking at a map and where that m...
