Re: Interesting new book
You are right, though I think many of his points are obvious and commonly accepted by everyone who is at least someone knowledgable. Doesn't everyone know at this point that "four noble truths" is a bad translation for a term that means something more like "four truths evident to nobl...

Re: Interesting new book
Some of the other points would probably be a little more contentious. This book makes two revisionary claims, both of which dramatically challenge the prevalent understanding of the teachings attributed to the historical Buddha. The first is that the early Buddhist discourses betray almost no famili...

Re: Any resources for information on Vajrabodhi
His biography has been translated by Zhou Yi Liang in “Tantrism in China,” Harvard Journal of Asiatic Studies 8 (March 1945): 241–332. There is also an entry in the Encyclopedia of Religion 2nd ed.

Definitely not the same. Suvarṇadvipi Dharmakīrti aka Serlingpa was much later the more famous logician Dharmakīrti.

Is there anything in that book that has not been taught in Shenpen Osel ? EDIT: Vol 4, No 3 I wonder if Nitartha will? They published Mahamudra: The Ocean of Definitive Meaning . They should do the series. EDIT: Teachings on, and transmission of, the 9th Karmapa's Pointing Out the Dharmakaya by the...

Introduction to the Middle Way, pg 34. Endnote 30. Recounted by Shakya Chogden. della Santina, Madhyamaka Schools, pg 85. Maybe kusulu not pandit (me). from Tilopa. Don't recall. Don't imagine. Chapa Chökyi Senge refutes Prāsaṅgika?
In The Karmapa's Middle Way: Feast for the Fortunate by Tyler Dewar on page 8 ones encounters: "One of the last great Tibetan Autonomist stalwarts was Chapa Chökyi Senge (phywa pa chos kyi seng ge, 1109-1169), a follower of Dignāga and Dharmakīrti who is said to have cleverly refuted Consequent...

Friend is busy so emailed Yangsi Rinpoche @ Maitripa. Dear Rinpoche, On Oct. 8 an op-ed ran in the New York Times quoting an erroneous source. Nicholas Kristof wrote that, " The Dalai Lama today is an extraordinary humanitarian, but the fifth Dalai Lama in 1660 ordered children massacred 'like...

Pratyekabuddha
Is anyone aware of a decent survey of this concept covering both the śrāvaka and mahāyāna literature? (I am familiar with Ria Kloppenburg's somewhat incoherent survey of the Theravāda commentarial literature). My general impression, based on the sources that discuss this in passing, is that the prat...

Re: claim about Fifth Dalai Lama
I don't think the point is particularly to change Nichols' or Sperling's mind, I think the point is to have a published correction in a reputable source that is accessible to everyone. Plenty of people would be persuaded by this. I am not a reputable source. You would need someone like Thurman for ...
